Samsung service it's shit, and so are their products.
while the give the image of being better quality their products are built of cheap things that break in a month.

by experience my LCD only lasted a month, and they had to repair it, after repairs it still not picking channels like it should. and they don't want to exchange it.

You're joking right. Do you follow HDTV? Samsung is considered the leader in PQ/price ratio amongst top end HDTVs and their LN52B750 has destroyed the competition this year in the LCD market, and is already a shoe in for "best traditional LCD of all time" without even hitting its second wave of releases.

Sure, with Sammy you play the panel lottery, but you do that with EVERY brand. With Sony, you get worse PQ in most cases at a much higher price, so WTF are you talking about? Are you just using your personal experience when you make those statements, or what?

@OP

Excellent post. People don't like negative things being said about Sony, but everything you've said is not only well thought out, it's absolutely true, and even Sony would agree with it, I'm afraid.

QFT. Some people just cannot take the truth.

Samsung is the leader of a declining market ( LCD TVS).

I follow the HDTV business in addition to gaming, and by 2017 or 2018, OLED TV's are expected to be as cheap as LCD TVs or slightly below cost, and are expected to offer more vivid pictures, matchbook thin , uses 1/3 of a lcd tv's electricity.  Sony also has made the 1st OLED TV, so it undoubtedly holds the biggest amount of Intellectual property for them.  With the OLED tvs and Blu ray, Sony is basically in some ways turning itself into an IP company as well as electronics/movies/music.

How much of the Blu-ray IP do you think Sony owns?

Cause, it's probably a lot less then you think.

Even if Blu-ray does DVD numbers... Sony won't make Toshiba money off it.

from what i've seen, the royalties aren't huge, mabey a dime per disc.  Still, that will add up when we get the 720, when we get the WIIhd, and even better, royalties tend to have a 50% profit margin its all gravy.  Anyway, me and you have discussed this before a few times I don't know what else to say or how I can rephrase.

We have?

Why will it add up when the 720 and WiiHD show up?

You don't think they'll use Blu-ray discs do you?  Cause... they won't.

Blu-ray needs to drastically outperform DVD to make Sony Toshiba style money.

Espiecally with the Chinese threat of going proprietary.  China being one of DVDs biggest cash cows in player production.

if the wiiHD goes blu-ray capable, then more people will buy the movies. If the 720 goes BD then more people will buy the movies and on top of that MS will have to pay sony a royalty for the privelage to use the disc.

China? The news that i have read recently shows that china is becoming more and more Blu-ray supportive. In fact if you give me a few minutes I can bring up some news about the greater degree of BD support in china..The thing of it is that the studios will support blu-ray if anything because it is harder to get beyond the BD's copy protection. So, the studios will get more money per copy of BD , than dvd on average. I dunno, i'd think that the studios will support the move to Blu-ray if they can be assured that the costs for movies and players will come down.

How does better copy protection = more money per copy?

Studios will support the move to Blu-ray... It still doesn't change the fact that Sony won't make nearly as much as Toshiba.

As i said... even if DVD sales equal blu-ray sony wouldn't be near Toshiba in terms of profit.

Also... for a Chinese article... how about this one?

Homegrown CBHD discs outsell Blu-ray by 3-1 margin in China

"it has the buzz of non-alcoholic beer"

The OP was all win because of that statement alone. You, sir, are hilarious.

Again, Sony doesn't own blu-ray. The BDA owns blu-ray and it's estimated that Sony has roughly a 30% stake in the BDA. The BDA has it's own marketing and administrative costs, for example the half billion dollars that the BDA paid Warner to beat HD-DVD.

So the BDA would have to be profiting for Sony to even receive any royalty money.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Um.  Ok.

That doesn't actually disprove my point in anyway though.

CBHD has grown faster... and if it stays on the market in any way that means sales then DVD.

And this is with Sony owning less of a share of Blu-ray then Toshiba did DVD.

Edit: Additionally your report doesn't say what you think it does.  The "Double digit increase" was for media spending period.  Not Blu-ray.

That double digit increase could be the cause of anything... say CBHD.

ok, naz, keep in mind that we have only recently seen chinese blu-ray manufacturers support the format because of trade agreements hashed out w/ the chinese govt. That's not only going to help the american consumer buy a cheaper blu ray player, but get chinese to buy blu-rays because chinese people like buying chinese electronics.

"
Blu-ray Disc As previously reported, the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has recently brought the high definition format to China. In order to accomplish this, they had to not only provide the technology to create Blu-ray Discs and players to Chinese manufacturers, but also create a licensing format which would lower costs and streamline the production process. One of the advantages to the rest of the Blu-ray buying world, commented Mark Leathan, Marketing Director at Samsung, was that we will soon see the "entry of the Chinese manufacturers into the Blu ray market that we will have a $99 Blu ray player." Taiwan isn't willing to support CBHD , just so that you know, naz
