Anyway, now to be slightly helpful.
Yes, yes, it launched at $600. THREE YEARS AGO! Let it go, people! Do we all hate Nintendo because they made the Virtual Boy ten billion years ago?
As everyone's said, it does play PS1 games. It doesn't play PS2 games because it raised manufacturing costs too much, and also caused overheating issues, or some such thing (which is why 60GB PS3s have the highest failure rate).
As for RRoD: It was a widespread failure. None of the PS3 or Wii's hardware issues have come close to that in frequency, and really I don't see how you can possibly break your PS3, short of throwing it out of a window or dumping it into a filled bathtub. I haven't gotten YLoD, and I've left my PS3 on for a week on end in an enclosed space with a game running (long time ago).
What gives Sony integrity? The fact that they are willing to fund projects which clearly aren't going to make much of a profit, if any: Heavy Rain, Team ICO, etc.
