| eggs2see said: Gnizmo, did you go through the first five pages like I asked? Plus ioi has stated that his reviewers put more weighting on "fun" and "gameplay" over "presentation" and "graphics". I say if you want a fun game and don't care about graphics or gamplay, there is a bunch of flash games on the internet that you can play for free, or roms you can download too. |
Again, I don't have to prove your argument for you. But to highlight why thats a bad idea I will say I have read every review. There is a clear favoritism to Sony and Microsoft platforms in all of them, but the PC games are the most biased obviously. Counter point?
| ioi said: Well we can get into a whole debate about how you review a game and what is important - I'll leave that to everyone else if you want to turn this thread into that. I'm simply saying that we don't have a "Nintendo bias" in our reviews, we strive for a particular balance which probably penalises poor presentation / graphics to a lesser extent that other sites. This can happen within a platform as well as across different platforms. |
Your 100% right, it's just my opinion and that is what i stated.
But what i am starting to believe now is that you have a Nintendo bias without even intentionally doing so. By putting more weight on elements that Nintendo developers also put more emphasis on you are unintentionally giving generous reviews to these games. Now this is just complete hypothesis, what is not is the review scores. So to shut gnizmo up ill think about getting a list of the scores and re-opening this thread with hard facts. That is unless of course you find the entire concept of the thread to be too anti VGChartz and would prefer i not do so. But i'm sure you don't have a problem with some criticism as long as it is not completely unfounded

The only thing, it's not balanced if certain aspect of today's games are penalises. We are in 2009 and closer 2010, graphics and presentation has become a big deal in most of the biggest games. It's frankly not fair to ignore it because it would hurt another console. Each game should be considered differently.
It sounds quite bias the way you said it, but after seeing COD4 on the Wii, a port, I must say a lot of developers should not get he benefit of doubt for their lack of effort on that system.
Graphics is a big part of gaming and for me once you ignore, it really hurts what reviews are suppose to be about.

I've yet to see you counter nen-suer's posts, is there something wrong with it?
You were cherry picking you got called on it and now you are trying to change you argument. A reviewer is allowed to weight any aspect of the review any way they like. A game doesn't have a natural or true mean score that reviewers scores must be distributed around.
And isn't it just shocking that a site openly admits giving greater weighting to gameplay over technical aspects of the game, how outrageous, what ever is the world coming to.
You can't go on a crusade trying to explain this supposed Nintendo bias, when you have yet to provide any kind of substantial evidence that it exists and ignored evidence to the contrary.

Even if graphics were the sole determinate in a games ranking it shouldn't affect one platform over another. Reviews are supposed to be about whether a person who owns the console would enjoy playing that game. Emphasizing gameplay over graphics does nothing to hurt this.

Graphics are important but how important, how good do they really need to be for a given genre? Would you agree that we already have genres where we are seeing diminishing returns, meaning that enhanced graphics have not expanded or pushed the genre beyond what was on offer last generation or the generation before? Have we sent a "best fighter ever" this generation?
I agree that in some genres graphics can be really important and can enhance the mood tremendously. In the end for me though, there is a very broad range of acceptable graphics in a game and they would have to be significantly below or above that standard before i think they should have a significant impact on the game's overall score.
If you want to get an accurate picture of what kind of fans run this site, look at some of the polls for this year. This site has a majority of PS3 fans more than anything else.
On the reviews, have you ever considered that other sites automatically knock down any Wii game a few pegs for "not being HD" or trying to compare a game graphically to a HD game? This happens on the majority of review sites. That's like reviewing a Toyota and saying "Well, its not a Ferarri, so its not that good"
@psrock, I agree completely. But as ioi has stated, this is his site, and his reviewers can review games as they like, and if you or I don't like it there are a million other sites we can visit.
@hsrob, I don't think i was called out on anything, and i don't appreciate being told i was. I simply asked people to do alittle research themselves, and clearly stated if they didn't want to then they needn't post, however several members (looking at you gnizmo) have found this concept to hard to fathom and are forced to post and "call me out".
@ioi, After hearing your thoughts on the matter i think i will just let the thread die (or be locked if you want), as you have put it, and as i said to psrock, this is your site and how you choose to weight games is completely up to you. While i still feel this review system gives leanience towards wii games that is completely within your reviewers rights to do so.
To be honest i started the thread due partly to the fact i was outraged by your review of Metroid Trilogy. Don't get me wrong i loved the game.. when it came out that is. But you actually rated it higher than Uncharted 2 (a game I, and almost everyone else in the world believes may well be the second coming of jesus). I also felt that it would be a nice change of topic to the usual threads of, "how much do you think nsmbwii will sell" etc, etc.....
Thanks for listening all, and good night.
What the heck?Won't waste my time anymore on this thread...
