Forums - Nintendo - Wiik 42 2007, The sale of the Wii last week

Hi all. It is time for the next Wiik. Lets start, shall we?

America – or a lot of debuts but nothing hits

The Wii sold 118 thousands units this week, thats up 20% from last week. Even with that rise it was again outsold by the 360 in the U.S.

Software Top 10:

Place LW Name This Week Last Week Change Total Sold
4 8 Wii Play 63,357 54,007 17.3% 2,565,598
21 23 Mario Party 8 20,590 22,771 -9.6% 1,286,278
29 27 MySims 15,040 18,457 -18.5% 131,789
33 28 Carnival Games 14,505 17,171 -15.5% 181,096
36 11 Bleach:Shattered Blade 12,531 37,517 -66.6% 50,048
41 46 Metroid Prime 3: Corruption 11,595 11,524 0.6% 463,711
47 42 DDR: Hottest Party 9,877 11,954 -17.4% 60,179
53 58 Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition 9,131 9,986 -8.6% 434,298
54 60 Legend of Zelda: TP 9,083 9,891 -8.2% 1,995,383
59 - Tony Hawk Proving Ground 8,419 - - 8,419

#1 The Wii got a lot of releases this week, but not a single one had high sales. The best one was Tony Hawk, debut on #10 on the Wii and #59 overall.

#2 With the raise of the Wii, Wii Play rose nearly 20%. It just keeps its attach rate to every new Wii

#3 ioi corrected the database so again: Next week Legend of Zelda should hit 2 million in the Americas

#4 The Wii Software is still overall flat, despite a lot of releases. The Wii has currently only 1 Title in the Top 10/20 and 7 Titles in the Top 50.

Outlook: Next week Zack&Wiki hit the shelves and will start the holiday lineup (more later in this post). I personal expect the Hardware to go down next week. Nothing special happened this week, but maybe some shops put some extra Wii on the shelves because of the high number of releases. 100-110 k sounds realistic to me.

Japan

There were 30 thousands Wii sold. Thats 8k more than last week (+33%). Like in the Americas there is no obvious reason for the rise. Maybe the bad times for all hardware begins to be over or some Wii\\\'s got sold along the PS3.

Top 10 Software:

Place LW Name This Week Last Week Change Total Sold
11 18 Wii Sports 13,079 10,799 21.1% 2,158,823
16 23 Wii Play 10,687 8,922 19.8% 1,722,249
24 16 Mario Party 8 8,790 12,496 -29.7% 874,220
30 15 Dragonball Z Sparking!Meteor 7,124 12,964 -45.0% 58,249
31 27 Mario Strikers Charged 6,760 7,790 -13.2% 79,040
49 39 Powerful Major League 2 3,882 5,559 -30.2% 15,932
60 58 MySims 2,814 3,531 -20.3% 19,655
73 67 Kekkaishi:Kokubourou No Kage 2,106 2,647 -20.4% 18,256
77 85 Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree 1,892 1,736 9.0% 266,354
81 77 Powerful Pro Baseball 14 1,719 1,991 -13.7% 126,277

#1 With the higher hardware sales, Wii Sports and Wii Play sales raised

#2 Big Brain Academy also raised this week

#3 Software sales are flat for the Wii in Japan, but not as in America. At least 2 titles are in the top 10 and 6 titles are in the Top 50.

Outlook: Next week hardware could rise : Maybe some are worried they don\\\'t get one at the Wii release of the year: Super Mario Galaxy. And there are some releases that could be hit in Japans. I would expect 38 thousands Wii sold next week in Japan.

Others

The Wii sold 70 thousands units this week (-5k/-6%). Despite the decline it has beaten the PS3 this week. At this point I would be glad if someone could point me where I can easily find software charts for the main Europe country\\\'s, so I can extend Europe with some software info.

European Software:

UK:

#1 Big brain Academy is still selling and taking #1 on the Wii and #9 overall

#2 Tiger Woods has very good legs, and is on place #4 for Wii (+3) and #23 overall

#3 The Wii has 3 Titles in the Top 20. So the Software sales on the Wii are good.

Other countries:

I need links to charts to put here Infos about others countries.

Outlook: Next week I expect higher numbers for the Wii: MP3 is hitting Europe. We have no update on the availability of the Wii in UK, but I would expect it is sold out there. The decline this week came from UK, which was down 6 thousand. Maybe shops are holding back some units for MP3 this week. I would say the Wii should be around 90 thousand units sold in Others.

Overall:

After the NPD number release Reggie said about MS and Halo: "They fired their bullet and our gun is loaded and ready to fire throughout the holidays". So I wondered how loaded is it? How many Bullets are there, and how big? I went to IGN and made a list of all upcoming releases this year I think could see decent sales. This is what I came up with:

CW Europe Japan America
43 Metroid Prime 3 Zack & Wiki Guitar Hero 3
No More Heroes Zack&Wiki
Rayman Raving Rabits 2
44 The Simpsons Game Super Mario Galaxy Manhunt 2
The Simpsons Game
45 LEGO Star Wars   LEGO Star Wars
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
46     Super Mario Galaxy
    Lara Croft Tomb Raider
Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 We Love Golf Medal of Honor Heroes 2
Super Mario Galaxy Nights Need for Speed ProStreet
    Rayman Raving Rabbids 2
    Resident Evil:UC
    Links Crossbow Training
47 Guitar Hero 3 Mario Sonic @ Olympics Dragon Ball Z
Mario Sonic @ Olympics Trauma Center: New Blood
48 Resident Evil: UC Naruto Clash of The Ninja Revolution -
Need for Speed ProStreet Wii Fit

Super Swing Golf
49 Pokemon Battle Revolution
Zack&Wiki - Brother in Arms
Brother In Arms
50 Lara Croft Tomb Raider   Super Swing Golf
51 - - -
52 - Animal Crossing Wii -

It looks like their gun is not only full, it is full of 9 mm. Big Time. From this week on, there is no week without a big release in at least one territory. Calender week 46 will be a hard week for Wii fans wallets in the US, with 4 possible chart toppers in the U.S. and some other middle profiled games. Holiday season should start with next week numbers with Zack&Wiki in the U.S. and MP3 in EU. I would say next week is the start of the crazy numbers the Wii will pull out of its bucket this fall. On the list are still release dates missing (Japan: Deca Sporta, America: Manhunt 2, Medal of Honor, Europe: Link\\\'s Crossbow Training)

Personal side note:

Yesterday I had the guys from work over to play Poker. After playing poker I showed them my Wii, because I want to do a Wii Sports league at work. I noticed some things:

#1 I need 2 more Wiimotes, so I can play Tennis with four players

#2 I need more space so I can play Tennis with four players

#3 Wii Sports is really the damn best pack in ever. I think I just sold Nintendo 2 Wii\\\'s in the long run, because it is so much fun. One of those will go to a person who never even looked at a VG console in its life.

Zak & Wiki hits Japan next week, too.

Biohazard: Umbrella Chronicles is in Japan same week as US.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympics hits Japan the same week as EU.

Super Swing Golf hits Japan the same week as Naruto and Wii Fit.

No More Heroes and Rayman hit Japan the next week.

Nights, Soul Calibur Legends, We Love Golf!, Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon and Shiren's Mysterious Dungeon 3 hit Japan the week after that.

Tomorrow after work I will go to the shop that often has games a day or two before release (I think the staff dont know that they have constant release-dates, the put it into the shelves as they get shippings) and pick my copy of Metroid Prime. I think this game will be somewhat big here in Europe, not as much as in the US, but it will sell some copies. I'm looking forward to playing it.

Wii Fit will be the real test for the Wii in Japan. The rest of those games are easy million sellers (excluding Naruto), but Wii Fit is unproven yet.

I honestly can't see how this Holiday will end up. Nintendo pulls out all of these big guns, Microsoft still has tons of big titles like Mass Effect, and Sony just pulled out a price drop.

I've never seen such an amazing clash of consoles.

Ah, i was going to ask why there are so few Japanese releases (choirs answered)

Otherwise very nicely done.
How about a "number of titles sold over" thing like The Source does, except instead of using LTD use per week....which is something i have been looking at with the new American chart options.

for instance this week;
----------- number of titles sold:--- all titles[3rd party titles]

software
sales
PS3WiiXB-360
1000+34 [26]    50+ [39+]    ?
2000+22 [15]36 [25] 50+ [44+]
5000+11 [7] 20 [12] 23 [20]
10,000+    3 [1] 7 [3] 15 [12]

admitedly you would want to use different numbers sold because you only get the top 50 for each platform and Wii has more than 50 titles selling over 1000 copies in the week, and 360 has more than 50 titles selling 2000+
although you could go trawling through the all format top 200 to see if more Wii/360 games are included, but with America that takes time....however i did do it for Japan (for week ending 14th) due to the small number of Wii/PS3 titles to look for.

 number of titles sold
 all titles [3rd party]

software
sales
PS3 Wii
500+5 [3]     20 [10]
1000+5 [3]17 [8]
2000+5 [3]8 [4]
3000+5 [3]7 [3]
5000+2 [1]5 [1]
10,000+    1 [0]2 [1]

When you stated that there will be no week without a big release are you excluding week 51?

I wouldn't say that Wii Fit is a test for the Wii ...

I would say Wii Fit is a test for Wii Fit. Wii Fit does not define the Wii, it is only a singular attempt at producing a game which may appeal to non-gamers.

Exactly, it's a test of how well the Wii truly appeals to the casual market.

Nintendo even said themselves they're expecting the game to be big.

That release chart is nice. I would request that that be a regular feature. Good work!

@TWRoO

I don't understand exactly what you want me to put up. Getting the data will be not that problem, I will most likley write me a data crawler so I don't have to do everything by hand. That costs a lot of work and will go much faster with a little helper programm.
