Forums - Sales - Analyst: 360 owners 'defecting' to PS3 this holiday ????

The Xbox 360 has long been considered the superior option for multiplatform games thanks to Xbox Live integration and the fact that it is, more often than not, the lead development platform. However, OTX analyst Nick Williams believes that things are changing, and that Xbox 360 users are slowly "defecting" to Sony's Black Box o' Blu-ray.

Williams talks about "franchise lineage," which is a fancy way of saying "what platforms people are buying sequels for." The analyst believes that, while Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Assassin's Creed were more popular on the 360, their sequels are gaining more traction on the PS3 this time around.

15% of those planning to buy the PS3 version of Assassin's Creed 2 own the Xbox 360 version of the first one, and 7% percent of those who plan to buy the Xbox 360 version own the original game on PS3. Allegedly, the numbers are also similar for Modern Warfare 2. While to most of us, these numbers don't say much, the analyst reckons that it shows a "sizable portion" of these so-called defections.

"The PS3 seems poised to shift the ratio of Xbox 360 to PS3 sales for most major multi-platform releases in its favor among dual owners," adds Williams.

What do you reckon? Is the PS3 slowly catching up to the Xbox 360 in the third party battlefield, or is Williams reading more into these numbers than he should? Speak your mind!

Those 15% of people are the smart ones, the other 85%, well is the opposite of the former adjective. If the rest of the market is like me, then I can say this is due to free online. Buying only exclusives for 360(Fable,Halo,mass effect, dead rising, gears, bioshock, before it went ps3) and buying everything else for ps3, saves 50 dollars a year for me, plus most of these games don't even need online play. I only paid for Live the year before the ps3 came out. This could be the reason why these defections are occuring, people are figuring out the smart way to game.

Probably some of both. But i would be surprised if defections are really that high especially for MW2. I would be interested in seeing where he got his numbers from.

Long Live SHIO!

Im not sure if alot are defecting, but Im sure a lot of gamers are buying/receiving PS3 to compliment their other systems.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

The price of live is a non issue to xbox gamers. If you look hard enough you can often find the 13 month card for $39 and occassionally for $29. When it comes to online multiplayer it usually boils down to what system your friends are gaming on.

This surprises me a bit. OK the paying for live vs. free PSN thing might be a factor for multiplats, for some people, but I reckon people still mostly choose a console based on the exclusive titles.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but exclusives is the reason I went with the PS3. Maybe I'm not like your average console gamer.

I would have been more inclined to predict that a lot more Wii owners are moving into HD console territory and more are going with PS3 now than 360 (whereas in the past Wii owners were tending to by 360s). Of course this article is about people who had MW and AC on one or other HD console and which console version they are buying this time, 'round so the Wii factor isn't part of this analysis.

So expect (relatively) more of a harware boost for PS3 from MW2 than for 360 despite the overwhelming majority of actual game sales going to 360? Hmmm that don't sound right.

The price of live IS an issue to xbox gamers.  I am an xbox gamer, and I don't pay for live because I get it for free on psn.  That is the reason I get these multiplats for ps3.  I have many more friends with a 360 then ps3, but they only own a 360 so they have to buy live.  I am not shackled to one system, so I go with the better deal.  The only reason they pay for live is because they only own the 360 and don't have a choice, not because their friends are on that system.  If they all owned both, they would probably buy more multiplats on ps3. Which is true for two of my friends and myself.
