I'm beginning to think the Wii and DS have peaked, particularly the Wii. Even with a price cut, it can't manage last year's numbers. It will sell for many years to come, but the chance of its crossing the PS2 is decreasing. The DS will, of course, breeze past the PS2. But it's even fallen below the Wii now. No matter, a hardware revision or two and a price cut will get things back on track, and it still outpaces the PSP by a fair bit.

The PS2 is dropping massively. Down 53% YoY? I suppose it's 9 years old, but why the sudden drop from 2008 to 2009? Lack of quality software?

PS3 is doing relatively well, up YoY. The price cut + Slim seem to have had a lasting effect rather than just a small boost, and have done a lot more to push hardware than the late 2007 price cut + 40GB. 2009 > 2008 > 2007 in sales, which is a good sign.

X360 isn't doing fantastically, but of course a price cut could change all of that. Not for a while, though. And I doubt Natal will push much hardware.

PSP isn't doing too abysmally, but sales aren't great, either. Even with the quality software it's seeing now that didn't get in these amounts last year.

Look kantor, the DS may have peaked, but it ebtter have, the things been out AGES

If wii has peaked this early its a SHOCK, I am not willing to accept the market leader has peaked in the second year

@somini

nowadays ioi makes a NEWS STORY on the numbers, I posted them as soona s I saw the news story....the numbers he puts in the NEWS STORY are int he form of that table thats near the bottom of the OP

so I didn't post it before numbers were up

I suppose the DS should peak around here: the Game Boy/Colour sold for a good 12 years, and the DS should do the same. But a console usually peaks halfway through its lifespan, or slightly earlier.

The Wii, market leader or not, has peaked. It sold more in 2008 than in 2009 with a $50 price cut. It's not going to die soon, or anything silly like that, but sales will decrease from now on. The PS2 peaked relatively early as well, I suppose. It depends on how the Wii sells these next few years.

Iwata says that he wants to make sure that sales go back up next year for the Wii, so calling it a peak may be premature

So?

SONY said PS3 can still win in summer, yet we all LOL'd at them, why does Iwata have more credibility?

But I agree with you, it can't have peaked, wii vitality sensor will make sure of this (many people here don't realise the potential in that thing)

@letsdance

Yeah the sites tracking with older games is bad I agree, it may be ovr Mass effect 1 overall

but the truth is GOW isn't a big franchise....not as big as people here think

While they are popular games, they can't really stand up to God of War III and GT5.

.....Didn't Mass Effect sell about on level with the last God of War?

1. No it didn't.

2. We already have a Mass Effect this gen. God of War, on other hand...

Throw in the PC sales for ME and you've got your "about on level"

So PC sales are going to cause an Xbox 360 HW boost. Yup, I really follow that logic.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

Khuutra - If the discusion is about system sellers pushing the sales of a console why bring up PC sales? There is no reason to expect the people who bought the PC version of ME to purchase a 360 for ME2 considering its on PC as well. Also, didn't the 360 version have terrible glitches that the PC didnt suffer from?

I said nothingn of the sort - just that Mass Effect is comparable in size to God of War.

@CGI look at the lineups for that time-period. It's really sony heavy

What about Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell Conviction? It's Sony-heavy, yes, but what about these two?

While they are popular games, they can't really stand up to God of War III and GT5.

What about Alan Wake? I know, it seems like straw-clutching but as I said, I'm looking at this from a realistic standpoint. Microsoft didn't get this far to just let the gen slip through their fingers.

YOua re clutching

alan Wake has the same system selling capability as Heavy Rain, probably not much as those kind of games don't really sell systems ona  big level

@Kantor

you are REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY over-estimating GOW3

Mass Effect 1 has OUTSLOLD God Of War 2

Slip FF13 in there

Remains to be seen my friend, I still say Microsoft isn't going to let this go down the way some of us think...

And you think Sony will let the momentum they currently have slip away? The current effort they are putting into stuff... Dissapear?

Don't know. I guess it's the speculating game from here on out...

SONY in the past have proven that they can be as "PUSHY" & "DETERMINED" as microsoft is

CGI we've seen that SONY come back with the PS3 slim, I think that sONY will stay now

All your speculation as of late has been anti-Sony

Unless of course, we are talking about a certain game...

You know its outselling what the PS2 was selling still, right?

Question though, what was PS2's peak year?

I believe third year

Here is the Wii VS PS2

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii&reg1=All&cons2=PS2&reg2=All&cons3=Wii&reg3=All&weeks=180&weekly=1

Wii is well above the PS2's weekly sales at the moment

Third year may have been PS2's peak, and so will be Wii's peak, but saying only that may actually be misleading. PS2 managed to sustain a high amount of sales. Heck, 2005 and 2006 saw higher PS2 sales than 2004. Wii was subject to a sudden YoY drop-off with no parallel on console sales history. Damn, Wii 2008-2009 drop-off was bigger than PS2 2001-2008 drop-off in Japan back in the year.

The same would happen everywhere else if wasn't for the pricecut, and know what? It still can't keep with 2008 sales. If thinks keep going like they are, Wii should see sort of a 'weak 2009' in 2010, maybe worse than 2007, leaving Nintendo with no choice but to lower price to $149 at 2010 holidays, sorta mirroring their 2009 behavior. Plus there is Natal with its massive media support and such.

good thing is MS is way too busy with the launch of windows 7 and advertising bing.so most of the resources are there.

Pray Stay Shun shall rise from the ashes :P

Also... Wtf just happened to my post?

Well, for one thing, I'm sure GoWII sales are affected by piracy. Not so sure about the first GoW, however.

That's not the point though. We're discussing console userbases, and how each game will affect HW sales. We had a Mass Effect this gen. A sequel won't have near the same impact as the first. Uncharted 2 is an exception since the ads, reviews, and cheaper PS3 price made it more accessible to the public. Now, as with God of War, we don't have a single God of War game on the PS3, so the potential is larger.
