You know times are weird when a Republican wins in New Jersey. O_o

Corzine's popularity was like 39% or something, I'm surprised he didn't do worse, early in the race he was behind by 20 something points, but caught up (possibly cause of Obama visits). Obama's job approval there is 61% in NJ.

Regardless, it's still impressive.

I guess, but the state used to be a swing state, Obama won a few states that hadn't been democratic sicne Johnson and Kennedy, but states change.

Anyway, Hoffman conceding in NY 23 so I guess all 3 big races are done.

Oh someone missed the Daily Show. Not sure how much you can logically deduce about "changing" sentiments in American thought due to such few elections haha. Actually I know you can't logically deduce anything from it so really this is illogical. Congratulate those who won and simply leave it at that.

We'll all know more by the elections of 2010 whether actual sentiments are changing. However I would like to introduce you to the "rally" effect. Essentially the party who wins the president usually gains seats in that election. This is due to independents/moderates "rallying" with the hype and times. But during the midterm elections there is not so much hype and the winning party loses these voters. What does it mean? It generally means that the president's party loses seats in the midterm. Think this has happened almost every time aside from 2002 and during FDR's presidency where they actually gained a few seats. Special cases due to events that had huge media hype (Depression and 9/11).

The point is you have to take this into account when you do see what happens in the Midterm election of 2010.

But obviously you can't take too much out of any of these. Really I think the whole media frenzy over these things here are because they have nothing else to talk about. Trust me if Michael Jackson had died now instead of in the summer this would have had no coverage. Goes to show you just a little about American media.

But yea seriously check out the Daily Show for today or online... pretty humorous take on all of this haha.

Zucas do you not know that this is akin to 1993? I would encourage you to look up what happened the following year... Will it be on the same level. Maybe not. However even if the GOP knocks off 2 Dems in 2010 than they lose their super-majority. Look at Nevada and Reid...he will lose.

Btw, I like Colbert better (even though he is a Dem in real life)

The chief difference between John Stewart and Stephen Colbert is that Stewart is actually a pretty funny comedian

I think the opposite. I can watch all of the The Daily Show and not laugh once. His show is becoming more about news than comedy.

Good to see how things went there.

I worked the polls in Ohio today - fun times. Went very well for my first time, and it seems that I did a fantastic job according to the other workers. Of course, putting in a 15hr day is never easy.

The thing I noted:
People totally destroyed school funding and other tax levies around the state. Usually, it's a fair split, but it was pretty one-sided overall. When I talked to the poll workers (after the polls had closed, and we could talk politics), they said the results weren't too surprising to them, and that they feel that a lot of people are tired of getting screwed by uncle sam. I only hope that it continues and people choose smaller government in every aspect.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

That margin in VA was huge, and 5% in NJ isn't small either.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Congratulations on the win, but isn't Virginia traditionally Republican anyway?

Virginia was republican for a long time, now it's a swing state. Yet, the fact that republicans are celebrating a governorship victory in a southern state as a major achievement is telling.

Also off year elections are traditionally weak for democrats: the voters are older and more likely to be white on average. On the other hand, if Deeds had excited the base more he would have done better, he lost some of the most liberal parts of the state (DC suburbs and north Virginia). If you have a bad candidate, nothing can save him.

All the more reason for them to hurry up and get that health care bill through before anything happens to paralyze it for another 20 years or so.
