Virginia was republican for a long time, now it's a swing state. Yet, the fact that republicans are celebrating a governorship victory in a southern state as a major achievement is telling.
Also off year elections are traditionally weak for democrats: the voters are older and more likely to be white on average. On the other hand, if Deeds had excited the base more he would have done better, he lost some of the most liberal parts of the state (DC suburbs and north Virginia). If you have a bad candidate, nothing can save him.
