Gears of War 2 wins imo.

Gears of War 2 is great. It's a shame I don't have many friends that have it, because I'd like to give the multiplayer a go with someone I know.
I skipped down to the last part of the article. I saw they misspelled Naughty Dog. I didn't bother reading the rest.

They both cost $60 at launch

GOW wins by a little bit in my opinion. We have both games, and the numbers of hours invested in GOW will never be matched by uncharted.

The only thing that I find Gears of War truly innovated was the quick reload mini game thing (Something similar may even be in another game that I just haven't found). Uncharted innovated several smaller thing that I hadn't seen in other games, like character models reacting to water (getting wet), plants/foliage reacting to character movement, being able to do third person aiming over the right or left shoulder (actually, I'm pretty sure other games have done this, but for some reason Uncharted is the first time I can remember seeing it). While not effecting gameplay directly I think these helped imerse the player into the game world. I hate how tons of people call down Uncharted for being uninnovative.. probably 9.9/10 games bring nothing new to the table, so why pick on Uncharted when it did, and carried an awesome experience with it. |
The game was a borderline movie with parts from other games. I loved Uncharted, because it perfected what wasn't done so well in the past. It reminds me of the Pitfall concept from when I was a child. Actually it almost mirrors it. Gears innovated more than the reloading mini game. Not only did it perfect what Killswitch did, but it did it in its own way. The 9.9's or whatever Uncharted don't matter man when it comes to an innovation argument. I am calling you out right now to name the innovation in Uncharted and I'll tell you a game which had it before hand. The scores for Uncharted were given because it was seen as a solid game. I personally loved it, but I've been gaming for quite a while (since I was 5) and know I've seen plenty of games with sectional parts of what Uncharted offers as a whole. Gametrailers.com was correct when they stated that the game wasn't innovative either on 'Invisible Walls'.
Never have I played a game where you felt like a war was coming at me from almost all angles. Nor have I ever seen such blood thirsty AI on the hardest levels. Need I bring the innovative weapons in this? Theres the sticky/spiked smoke and frag grenades that explode when someone from the opposing side runs by it; they've got bayonette rifles, Torque Bow with explosive arrows, the running controls depicting a struggle and breath is brand spanking new to the genre. Never have I played a third person shooter with slicing bayonette grapples. Gears 2 continued to impress, but this is about part one. I don't even want to go into part two because this argument will be over real soon. As I said, they both cannot be compared. They are both great in their own way. One game took the innovative route and the other game took the safe route.
Uncharted is easily better.
Gears isn't even good IMO. That game gets by on graphics alone. Gameplay is a lost art when it come to the Gears of War series.

I don't see the difference here.. You say that Uncharted only took other things and perfected them, and thats not innovative, then you say that Gears of War perfected what killswitch did, and that IS innovative? And weapons? those have been in games before, so already the guns aren't innovative, they're just an improvement, or "perfection" from what there was before. Smoke grenades have been around, frag grenades that explode when someone from the enemy team runs by it are called proximity mines/grenades in other games, tons of games have guns with blades on them, weapons with projectiles that explode on impact have been around and out button mashing an enemy to kill them has been done before, ect ect.
What I'm trying to get at here is that the subject of innovation is very subjective. You can say every game this gen is a copy of things that came before, or you can say that every game is innovative because they added one small little change somewhere.
The problem I have is that of all the tons of games that are nothing new, people pick(ed) on Uncharted a lot for some reason. Is it because it's too highly rated and they need something to nitpick? I know the games not perfect, but it is a far cry from being bland and copied from elsewhere.
And before people flame, I do think Gears was innovative (and awesome), but I also think Uncharted was.
I think this is a rather tough comparison. Uncharted 1 was not overly special in my opinion, and while it can be stated that it has done nothing that hasn't been done before, what it did do was put a number of things from different styles of games into one game. So that is something new. Uncharted 2 then simply improved on this formula.
Gears on the other hand did a number of new things. It has the over the shoulder cam, bringing the player much closer to the action. And it's cover system was something that had never been done before in a game, or if it had then Gears brought it to the masses by doing it extremely well.
Both are amazing games, but i personally wouldnt rate one against the other as i think they are both different enough that they are not really in competition with each other.
