Forums - Sales - When will PS3 surpass Xbox360 for total sales? 2011 or 2012

But they must run all those 42.something km to qualify, if they pull out earlier, they lose.

Edit @thx1139:

Isn't it? Do only cuts to Arcade price qualify as cuts?

It wasn't a cut.  It was an upgrade to their Pro SKU in a sneaky way.  Just like dropping the 80GB to the 40GB price wasn't a price cut.

And yes, if both Nintendo and MS finish a normal generation's time in 2012, and the PS3 stays a few more years, if it passes either of them after that time period it doesn't count.  I'm glad we agree on this.

Good conclusion, Steroid.

no... it isnt.  silly comparion.  The PS1 and ps2 were leading their respective gens and ahead of those other consoles anyway.

are you seriously suggesting that (slightly extreme to prove a point here) if sony waited for 3 years longer than MS.. and the next xbox was at say 20million, whilst at the same time the pS3 had overtaken the 360 that it would be some kind of victory for the PS3?

If that were the case, we'd be somewhere in 2012 or thereabouts, and Sony would doubtless be making big profit off the PS3, so every unit sold would be good for them and good for me, as a gamer with their console. End of the day, the victory is the money, and it would be profitable times for Sony.

Yes, in fact  I was just meaning the case of only MS pulling out while both Wii and PS3 were still running.

OTOH, if you think about it, even only one console managing to still sell enough to justify the effort when the others can't anymore would be, if not a victory, an achievement, and a quite important one for Sony, if it manages to do it, as with PS3 starting profiting quite late, it will be advisable to sell it as long as possible and viable.

About the cut, well that argument looks a lot like MS damage control PR after its cut worked less than competitors' ones, but maybe it's to early to talk, we'll have to wait and see sales after Xmas to get some longer term trends.

For MS to drop another few billion on another console while Sony simply "sits out" "next gen" and rides the PS3 of course that would be a victory. MS will first try and re brand the 360 with Natal and continue to try and convice people they don't need blu-ray until 360 sales start to seriously dwindle. Then they'll come out with the 720.

With Wii HD and PS3 looking to be similar in specs the 720's power won't even be able to stretch its legs as developers will be forced to choose between developing for WiiHD/PS3 or go 720 exclusive. Consider MS's first party studio situation and you'll have an understanding of where I'm coming from.

You left off the *IMHO* tags.

I disagree with everything you have typed.

Of course MS could embrace Blu Ray, even with the Zune HD service, the rental service, Netflix and the like. At this point in the game, a Blu Ray add-on will fail so much more harder than the HD-DVD player. Why? Come Black Friday, you'll be able to pick up a BR player for $100. Even on sale, I've seen BR players for $125. They'll hit $99 on Black Friday - trust me on this.

Next, unless MS is just giving them away, they are MS and will overcharge for it. Plus, the player, which will be an add-on, won't play 360 games.

And you do believe that the devs will hold on developing, publishing games on the hottest new system? Uh, no. Look at the attach rates now. MS will be the first in the next generation, again, and will call the shots again.

If Sony sticks to their 10-year plan, and wait until then - or late 2013-2014 to roll out their new console, forget it.

Sony can't live on the PS2's street cred much longer. The PS3 is a good machine - but it's not the powerhouses like the PS1 and PS2 were, IMHO.

i can't believe people underestimates the power of sony's playstation brand. but anyway, i think ps3 has a chance to catch up in the next months or next year. and if it never does, then i bet my money it will never happen, because once natal comes out, xbox360 sales will surge once again. no matter though, both consoles are the bomb-diggity, and i'd rather have both companies still alive until next gen. WHY?!? Competition makes everything better. I bet sony wouldn't even churn out as much quality exclusives as it is now, if the xbox360 wasn't a success. same thing goes with microsoft, you think they would go as far as to make the xbox live's quality as good as it is now without sony's playstation? i don't think so....

look at nintendo, they have no competition so far in the motion control business, and its been a while since they had a really great 1st party exclusive, u know why? people support them anyway for the crap, recycled games they keep making, that and there really isn't competition for them, cuz they already blew both sony and microsoft out of the water....

Why do some people think its so cool to have the other company die in shambling flames? If anything, microsoft's xbox brand has a great victory with them already, because they have already finished their goal to become an established brand in the video game industry. i guess its easier to point out the playstation's decline this generation, after their victories 2 generations in a row. but sony IS TRYING, xbox360 fanboys just fail to see that, and microsoft IS TRYING, ps3 fanboys just fail to see that too!

Sega and Atari both say HELLO!

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

If the PS3 was to surpass the 360 sales by 2011, it could only be accomplished if the 360 stopped selling which won't happen obviously. So my guess is if the PS3 is to ever surpass the 360, it'll be sometime in 2012.
