PS3's gains in 2008 were due to price drops, and 360 almost immediately made back that ground when it got an equivalent drop later in the year. That's actually why I'm skeptical of a long term pattern of PS3 over 360, we're bound to get another "equivalent response" next year from Microsoft (redesign + price drop) which may just keep the cycle going as is.
And while the financial crisis hit in late 2008, we really didn't start feeling the effects consumer side in games retail until early/mid 2009. And bizarrely, 360's actually held up the best year-on-year compared to to other platforms (discounting the DSi and PS3 slim rebrands). Wii was hit hardest, but then it had farthest to drop, and still sits in a comfortable 1st place even.
the ps3 can catch it i would say late 2011,
by then the ps3 should be 199

are you seriously suggesting that (slightly extreme to prove a point here) if sony waited for 3 years longer than MS.. and the next xbox was at say 20million, whilst at the same time the pS3 had overtaken the 360 that it would be some kind of victory for the PS3? |
If you are running a marathon and you are second, but you pull out just before the third overtakes you, do you think the final ranking will be calculated at the moment you pull out or when the race ends?

Change every spot where it says something about PS3 and insert 360. Hey look we are looking at the end of 2008 all over again! Seriously, if you people think the PS3 sales will stay like this forever and nothing will be done on either side to change them, you need to take some history lessons on the last few years of this console generation. I say never. Why? Because next year the 360 will likely repeat 2008's holiday season and put the lead right back up to 8 million. And it will keep bouncing back and forth until next gen, with the 360 always at least a few million ahead. @kowenicki Good post. Everyone needs to seriously stop setting themselves up for embarrassment |
You are missing a little detail: this Autumn too MS did a price cut, just like its competitors. But Sony's and Nintendo's ones worked very well, MS' one, well, er, ehm...

I expect gap to be around 4 mln. by the end of this year or by the end of January next year - http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=89327
PS3 on average week outsell x360 in Japan by 30k. So, 40 weeks - 1.2 mln. PS3 in 2010 before Natal hits. Now add GT5 boost, small boosts from Yakuza 4, Lost Planet 2, Star Ocean 4 and you will get 1.5 mln. atleast.
In NA PS3 and x360 sell very close to each one, the only increase i see from GT5 and GoW3, maybe FFXIII and MAG. That is 0.5 mln.(12k per week) in best case. I don`t know when AGENT, Heavy Rain, The Last Guardian and other games are coming, but they will also help.
And in Europe, PS3 outsell x360 by 50k on average. That with help of GT5 and other games, i think will continue, where we will get 2 mln. in 40 weeks.
Total: 4 mln. in 40 weeks. That`s somehow we get 100k weekly PS3 advantage on average next year for first 40 weeks.
Also, x360 redesign, well, don`t forget, that there are x360 HDD, so it is very unlikely for x360 to get a slim model. While 50$ pricecut won`t really help.

It is not a price cut when the lowest available 360 price remains the same. Not to mention that same lowest available console now doesnt come with any games.
Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

If you are running a marathon and two competors finish before you, you can't run an extra mile and say you are actually the winner.
^^
But they must run all those 42.something km to qualify, if they pull out earlier, they lose.
Edit @thx1139:
Isn't it? Do only cuts to Arcade price qualify as cuts?
