Forums - Gaming Discussion - IYO, what are the worst things this gen has brought to the table?

I'll do a console by console one to go along with my general one:

PS3:

- Mandatory installs - Not so much a problem anymore but before it was in every flipping game

- Long Updates - The firmware updates seem to take forever, even the ones that seem absolutely useless

- Bad ports - Again, not so much a problem now. But in 06 and 07 this was a huge problem.

- $600 at launch

- No good games till late 2007 - Basically people had to go about a whole year before good games started rolling in

360

- Red Ring of death

- $60 for online

Wii

- Did they put any effort into online?

- Casual Games/Party Games - This is the 3rd parties fault, not Nintendo's

- Motion Controls

- No DVD/Blu-ray

- Excessive peripherals (Balance board, wii wheel, nunchucks, zapper, etc)

Actually, there IS DVD. Through Wii Homebrew.

MEGA FANBOYISM

DLC, paid online, lazy developers, lower quality hardware, paid timed exclusivity.
no zelda, team ico, or FF game yet.

EDIT: forgot, tons amounts of shovelware and wii fit like games, for us underweight gamers it's useless.

the idea of DLC and add on peripherals. Especially peripherals that should have been part of the system to begin with! cough *Wii Motion Plus/Sony Wand/Natal* cough cough

FPS overload.

Nintendo going casual.

I think more than anything the broken review system bugs me, media crumbling to pressure from console makers or publishers to review certain games highly, which in turn lowers general standards. An average game should score a 7, not 8.5 like it does now.

Of course, it only fuels fanboy wars, even when Halo scoring this and Uncharted 2 scoring that means jack shit. That's not to say anything of their quality; it's just that their true quality is so hard to judge with a glass ceiling.

Also, I hate the reduction in quality of single player campaigns. An eight hour game is the norm and you pretty much need to play GTA or an RPG for anything longer.

And lastly, WAY too many FPS's.

PSN: chenguo4
Current playing: No More Heroes

1. casual gamers who think they are hardcore

2. hardcore gamers who have become casual and still think they are hardcore

- Announcing announcements
- Awful hardware reliablity ; this gen has proven that a one year warranty isn't enough.
- Day 1 DLC
- Paid DLC that's on the disc
- Tacked on motion controls
- Tacked on online
- Me-too shooters

No they shouldn't be part of the system to begin with unless they give a normal controller as well with it. They better not do that next gen or I am gone from console gaming.
