2-lack of jrpgs on home consoles

What???

JRPGs already released this gen:

on Xbox 360:

  • Lost Odyssey (the best JRPG this gen, imo)
  • Tales of Vesperia
  • Blue Dragon
  • The Last Remnant
  • Magna Carta 2
  • Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope
  • Spectral Force 3
  • Unfinite Undiscovery
  • Final Fantasy IX
  • Phantasy Star Universe

on PS3:

  • Valkyria Chronicles
  • Disgaea 3
  • Demon's Souls

on Wii:

  • Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon
  • Dragon Quest Swords
  • Tales of Symphonia: DotNW
  • Final Fantasy Cristal Chronicles

on PS360:

  • Eternal Sonata
  • Enchanted Arms

So you played all of them?
Oh... I guess you're a '1-console-only' owner... if true, I'm sad for you.
And let me guess... you're stuck with the poorest of the 3 right now, the PS3.
Another teen thinking Sony would always be the king of RPG? I'm only guessing.

I'm tired of people crying "but... but... there is no JRPGs this gen"
Open your eyes
.
Go buy consoles.

And don't let brand-loyalty fool you.

My Gaming Setup

Around the Network

- over-excessive DLC

- the emergence of a 'release now patch later' attitude

- increased retail prices which are unjustified (don't cry higher development costs, if dev costs are so high then the devs/publishers themselves just need to get their shit together)

- unnecessary focus on online to the detriment of physical multiplayer and split screen

- ridiculous number of sku's

- overkill on special editions and pre-order bonuses

- too much focus on graphics and FPS genre

- needless hardware revisions of the handhelds

- the fact that thanks to wii shovelware can now be successful

- over-hyping like never before

- increasingly poor game reviews with more misunderstanding, bias and ignorance than ever before

- increased development costs forcing studios to close or switch to shovelware or get gobbled up by the big boys and turned into nothing but a name (not all developers/publishers may be capable of getting thier shit together)

- longer development times

- more legal/controversy issues (industry had them before i know, but this gen it seems more visible and more widely reported)

1. Excessive DLC and announcing DLC before the game is even out. Devs have started a habit of leaving things out purposely to sell them separately as DLC. That is just wrong, i refuse to buy that shit.

2. Motion controls. Come on, I was doing just fine with my standard controller. I don't need to add waggle to make games fun. Just a personal preference thing.

3. Casual games. Some of them are good but 95% of them are just shovelware.

4. Too much reliance on game reviews. I hear way too often that "oh that game only got a 79 on metacritic, it's no good." While reviews are great its just their opinion of the game, it doesn't mean the game is good or bad. I despised Mass Effect, doesn't mean it's bad. In fact I didn't like MGS4.

5. Too many SKU's (different models of consoles). Lets take a tally. The PS3 had the 60 and 20 gig initially, then they brought in the 40gb with no BC and the 80gb which did have BC, then I think they had a 160gb console also with no BC (that might have been a limited time offer). And I'm sure I've forgotten some others along the way. Then they discontinue all previous ones when the slim was announced. Oh and guess what now theres a 250gb slim as well as the 120gb. The 360 is no better (elite, arcade, pro/premium, core), but this post is getting too long already. The Wii is the only one that got it right. 1 SKU since the beginning.

Around the Network

Here's some specific ones for Nintendo, Microsoft & The PlayStation Company

The Big N

- too many under-supported and under-utilized accessory's (wii zapper, wii wheel, wii speak, even balance board to an extent with 3rd partys)

- Animal Crossing: City Folks - if you're going to make a AC game make an effort Ninty

- Wii Music

- E3 2008

Microsoft

- ludicrously unreliable hardware from launch till 2007/8 (don't know which year they sorted it out somewhat, I hear its apparently pretty reliable now)

- no built in wi-fi

- no full BC for xbox

- making their console look nice instead of a fat brick thus ruining comedy for a generation

Sony

- a launch price so high you had to take out a 2nd mortgage

- no PS2 BC

- making us wait for dualshock 3 and instead giving us the average sixaxis for what seemed like an eternity that could have been better spent waiting to destroy Optimus Prime (+3 for anyone who gets that reference)

- so bad its bad marketing (seems to be better recently)

Most of the rest of my points have already been stated (such as people putting too much faith in reviews)

DLC, DLc & DLC

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Haze lol the halo killer!

Microtransactions- I don't think there is a gamer out there that isn't pissed about these. Especially ones that seem wildly over priced.

Game Installations/Patches- there is nothing more that I hate than installations. First time I tried to play Ratchet and Clank on PS3 I found out that I HAVE TO HAVE a certain amount of memory already on the hard drive just to install that one and start playing. Now that is just stupid. Second is patches. I don't care what people think or what developers say... if you can't make a great, polished game the first time then you didn't make a great game ever. Covering it up by fixing it later is a cop out. I'm glad they do it but we shouldn't look up at those developers but instead down.

Local Multiplayer Disappearing- seriously WHAT HAPPENED. Aside from really the Wii, local multiplayer is just disappearing. Of course all of use like competing with those online and playing with online friends... but hey we also have friends in real life that maybe want a quick game of Smash Bros or Halo. Yet some games just completely have thrown that out of the window. Not good.

More isn't Always Better- you get the feeling nowadays that everything needs an elaborate storyline, some form of multiplayer, etc. But let's face it not every game needs this. Not every run of the mill shooter needs to have their crappy story lines introduced and make us suffer through it and then move on to the uninspired multiplayer. If you aren't going to make them competent then don't include them at all.

Hardcore-Casual split: really this silly form of nationalism I find despicable and unwarranted. Anyone that plays video games is a gamer. I'll write an article on this eventually but people need to stop trying to form elitist groups and simply just find comfort in your general gaming community rather than splitting.

There are plenty more but that's a good start.
