Biggest entertainment launch in history? Doubtful. I would think the final harry potter book would hold that title considering it sold (not sure if the reports means shipped or not) like 15 million copies in the first 24 hours alone WW (most of which were sold in the UK and the US).

But I guess the games industry doesn't count literature as entertainment.

Except GTA IV sold 6m copies at 3x the price, with Special Editions as well, it brought in $500m and around the world, I don't think that copeis of the book were sold at $33. In the UK some places were selling it for £5

Modern Warfare 2 does have a decent chance of beating that number with all the Special Editions

Am I the only one anticipating the sales more than the game itself?

The fifteen million figure I found was for the first 24 hours. I haven't been able to find the rest of the week so anything I say is speculation. But potter would only have had to sell an extra 3 million titles to triple the 6 million figure, it could very well have sold more then that. I do know there was a report in 2008 that said the book had sold around 44 million copies. Either way potter would have made a similar amount of money, in Australia I know many stores were selling it for 50 aussie dollars for example, but yes as always many stores were undercutting each other.

Eitherway its going to be close between the three properties.

I feel so at peace with myself for not being interested in this game at all. It's as if an avalanche is about to bury the world, but I already know I'm going to be safe.

UK has the weak pound to thank for massive cross border purchases.

I'm a PC preorder@£25 so 28€.... instead of 60€ in france.... Yay!

@kitler

yeah MW2 will blow everyone away with its sales

yeah but (and feel free to correct anything i misrepresent cause i'm writting this off the top of my head)...

1. Halo 3 has the biggest week 1 opening of any game at 3.8M

2. according to this (and ioi) just the UK is going to have a opening on the happy side of 1M.

3. according to the pre-order charts there are more than 2M preorders so an opening of say 3M seems reasonable if not too low.

4. non-americans also buy video games.  (i would hope this is obvious but sometimes on these forums....)

this isn't just going to be huge, it's going to blow the current records out of the water.

Actually the first week is GTA IV... Halo 3 is the biggest OP in a single plataform. Something that is really annoying to me is that people don't count PC sales. Mostly because this site don't track PC usually, but for such a great game we will have at least a notion(right ioi?). This game will outsell GTAIV with just consoles, with pc the OP will be even better.

gotcha, i guess i just had the wrong idea in my head. I looked up GTA IV and between ps360 it had a 5.92M opening.  should be a close race.
