Nah, Suimasen can and is also used as a "substitute" for Sumimasen. Or rather, its a shortened version of it (and less polite I believe).

And smoking is Suu. Its "Tabako wo suu no?" rather than "Takabo wo sui no?"

Haha, but he's right though, when I'm writing I should used the formal version. That's why I need to study Japanese more, I can speak it casually, but I can't speak it formally, nor write it properly at all.

Well thats where you see the difference between learning/studying Japanese and growing up with it.
I, too, have grown up with it so I'm rather bad at formal speech. And my writing/reading skills are that of 1st/2nd grader in Japan...

But still, I went to Japanese classes for 1 semester and they thought us both forms of "Sumimasen" (Sumimasen and Suimasen).

I sort of feel bad for being in the class, but at the same time I don't want to be in a weird "in between" position (of knowing and not knowing Japanese).

It feels kind of awkward to be able to speak normaly and read really badly, though.
Its all fun and games when you talk, but then ZOMG theres something that needs to be read. I'm like... eh, yea...

Regarding my writing/reading skills, I was talking about Kanjis. I can't memorise Katakana for s***

I can read Katakana, but I kinda struggle to remember them for writing O.o

I can also read decent kanji, but can't remember them for writing.

Through languages am a great speaker, but as soon as I learned how hard japanese literture I just turned a blind eye.
