Forums - General - Michael Bay - Upset with Paramount, "Blu-Ray is where my money is."

Ehh, Bay isn't really an important director.
It'd be nice to see Transformers on BD, but I think it is much more important to have a guy like Spielberg supporting your camp rather than Bay.

Either way, I'm hoping Spiderman 3 can break Transformers day one sales. Not nearly as good as the first two, but definitely a better movie than T.

Michael Bay isn't that good of a director...

I do support Blu Ray, though.

i guess he ran out of the cash Paramount paid him.

so do they insert money into Micheal Bay and he makes noise/movie?

they handed him chash to shutup about switching to HD-DVD. They tried to do the same with Speilburg luckily Speilburg refused.

Er... I don't remember Spielburg ever saying anything about HD DVD. Considering he is co-owner of Dreamworks and helped make the decision for them to go HD DVD exclusive it would be kind of odd for him to criticize it. Of course, once again I reiterate that neither format is even close to relevant in the movie market.

Papramount owns all rights to Dreamworks, Speilburg supports Blu-ray thats why he refuses to have his movies released on HD-DVD and whenever Universal decided to be stupid and announce his titles forces Speilburg to get an public apology. Very unprofessional for HD-DVd truly. Makes them look untrustworthy but I guess using Microsoft's money but Sony does have Apple.

It really doesn't matter. For some reason people still seem oblivious to how little HD formats matter. Transformers had record breaking day 1 HD format sales, and yet those sales still equaled only 2% of the total 1st day sales. Blu-ray and HD DVD are still both complete non-factors. To think, not a month ago I remember people saying DVD would be dead by 2009. These formats have been in retail more than a year and can still only take 2% of the movie sales.

it's not that i don't believe you but where did you get the 2% figure from?  I guess it just goes to show how tiny of a niche it is.  It would be funny to compare the userbase of DVD to HD formats.

I have never heard that DVD would be dead by 2009. HD DVD, however...

I'm pretty sure it was leo-j who said it, so it's not necessarily logical. Still, even suggesting HD DVD will be dead when recently most news has been overwhelmingly positive for HD DVD (Paramount exclusivity, record breaking day 1 sales, $200 player, etc.) doesn't make much sense. Not that either matter, but HD DVD obviously isn't going anywhere.

Record breaking one day sales only matter if the same could not be achieved on the other format.  Warner recently came out and said that the Blu-Ray version of 300 outsold the HD DVD version 2:1.  I'm sure studios look at how much higher the first days sales of Transformers could've been had it been released on Blu-Ray as well.  Ps3 owners are the exact audience a movie like Transformers caters to.

Also, Paramount exclusivity?  So far the week ending Oct. 14th here in the States was one of of Blu-Ray's biggest victories over HD DVD, with BR software outselling HD software 71:29.  And that was after the Paramount exclusivity deal.  It sure is helping.

Studio support in general is not on HD DVD's side.  Here is the studio output from the 4th quarter of last year:

And we all know it's content that ultimately wins battles like this, or else the $200 (and shortly thereafter $99) GC would've destroyed the ps2.  I don't expect $200 HD DVD players to overcome the onslought of Blu-Ray standalones and the ps3 install base.

Also, the ps3 userbase will only become more powerful over time, regardless of the ps3s sales.  70% of ps3 owners don't buy Blu-Ray movies.  Why?  Because they don't own an HDTV.  However, for over 2 mil. people in NA, the format war has already been decided.  Reatailers are really pushing HD this holiday, and as ps3 owners upgrade from SD to HD, they'll already have a Blu-Ray player sitting right by their tv. Expect the percentage of ps3 owners that buy Blu-Ray to increase a good bit over the holidays.

It's true. Twice (1st time, 2nd time) Universal has shown HD DVD cover art of Spielberg movies like Jurassic Park, and both times Spielberg came out and said that these movies were not coming to HD DVD any time soon, and Universal was forced to make a retraction. Also, Spielberg movies were specifically excluded from the Paramount/Dreamworks exclusivity clause.

In contrast, Close Encounters of the Third Kind will be the first Spielberg film released in HD, exclusively on Blu-Ray, by Fox Pictures.

190,000 copies of Transformers were sold on HD DVD, compared to 8.3 million on DVD.

eh?? Do people still care about hdtv? I joke, but I really do think most people don't care.

That is impressive makingmusic, and I'm sure Spider-Man 3 will break Transformers' short lived record, but I still don't see how one side is close to dying out. You also have to remember that the effects of the shift of Paramount and Dreamworks weren't seen until a big movie release (Transformers) showed up. Comparing sales next week will be very different I'm sure. Also, I'm guessing Spider-Man 3's percentage of sales on Blu-ray will be even less than Transformers' percentage was on HD DVD. To say either format is about to die pre-holiday (when most purchases will be made) doesn't make much sense.
