Forums - Gaming - Stellar Dawn, new mmorpg from Jagex

Well, a lot of people will know Jagex from the game Runescape(which gets loads of bad comments on how ugly it is by WoW players)

They're making a new Sci-Fi mmorpg called Stellar Dawn, I know it's called mechscape in the vid, but that's just the project name.

Some things to clear up, so you don't need to post it.

- Yes, the graphics are total crap compared to what you can do today. No need to post it, I know, and still don't care.

- Like Runescape it will be f2p, but if you want acces to the full game you'll have to pay each month.

- Stellar Dawn will have NO GRINDING, you don't level up like in all other mmorpg. No need to do the same over and over again. I don't know what system they will use instead, but they only confirmed no grinding and stuff like that.(I hate grinding most of the time xD)

- It's a browser game, but it does have fullscreen, so you don't have to look at your browser all the time if you choose not to(you can also choose to not play fullscreen)

- It requires no download, just like runescape.

- Just like Runescape this game will have weekly content updates. No need to buy a new game like WoW.

- It looks pretty decent if you ask me even though I'll probably not play it much once it's out, just want to see you guys opinion on this.

- It says it will be released in 2009, but they cancelled it because they fired the guy who was leading the project because they didn't like where it was going to. They will release it once they think it's ready.

- People will play it regardless of how crappy you guys think it is, runescape has over a 100million accounts and over 10million people playing it each month.

- Why do you think Sony made that (lame) mmorpg? It's because they want some of the succes that Jagex is making in this market.

And how do you imbed stuff here? :P

I stopped caring about this game at "Jagex".

Runescape is the most awful game I have ever played (okay, maybe not the MOST awful, but one of them), and I held that opinion long before I played WoW.

Well, I think it's better then every god damn first person shooter that gets released nowadays, but I agree, Runescape aint that much fun(I've played the game, also the reason why I know of Stellar Dawn, but I've retired of any mmorpg long time ago bc of the grinding). But it's not like runescape though, no grinding and runescape is all grinding.

I used to LOVE runescape back when i was 10 to 14... back after my dad therw me across the room and then the lovesofa at me after getting snappy about runescape i quite it and realized how crap it was.

Still its nice to see good ol' ja branching out finally. they must have more then enough money for it.

Yeah, runescape is aimed more towards a younger demographic, I've read some interviews where they said that this game is aimed more to adults. They also said they probably make as much or even more cash then WoW brings in. Don't know if you have to believe that, their words, not mine.

The art style and graphics are 'exactly' the same as Runescape. You'd think for how long it has been they would have had a complete redo of their graphics engine.

I think Jagex need to outsource the technology behind their MMOs, as they usually have quite decent ideas behind them.

It runs on the same engine probably, and they can do a lot better graphics, but their games run on the most ancient of hardware. Why do you think so many people play runescape? You don't need a good pc for it, heck a crappy pc from 2000 can still play it easily. It's just being smart really.

I don't think you can name a lot of 3rd party publishers that make more cash then Jagex tbh(I don't call 10 3rd party publishers a lot by the way).

Jagex is by no doubt one of the most profitable independent developers in the UK.

But the crappiest PCs will get better over time, if they keep the game looking the same there will be no point in playing it when you could play something that looks much better.  Especially if we're only considering people willing to pay for the bonus features, the customers.

Them releasing a brand new MMO with the same engine means it will look similar for quite a few years.

Nah, they're going to update both games at the same time graphics wise. Saves them a lot of work. And from the time when I still played, they kept making graphic updates.

Runescape has a lot more paying members then a lot of better looking mmorpg's. What you say doesn't make any sense. Yes, PCs will get better over time and they will slowly update their graphics, but they would make a lot less money if they decided to have graphics on par with WoW for example.

You'd think people would have learned by now(this gen as main example) that good graphics is not really important.

Jagex earns a big sum of cash through ads on their site. 10 million people visiting your site regulary= lot's of cash through ads only(If you're f2p in runescape then you're forced to see ads while you play lol)

They're also intrested in the ps3/xbox360/wii by the way, so perhaps you'll see some retail games of them in the future.

Those better looking MMOs can charge much more than Runescape does for its subscription.  Also, the gap between Runescape and WoW is pretty  decent.

Runescape isn't as popular as it is just because it looks like that.  That's a pretty narrowminded look at things, as there are also many MMos that look the same or worse than it.
