Forums - Nintendo - Is Nintendo still the best company for video games?

I don't remember any "hardcore" Nintendo games on the Gamecube.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

The Wii has a better line-up than the N64 & GC combined for me. Nintendo are great. Still the best videogame company by a mile.

Why are people talking about Starfox and F-Zero as though they're good franchises? Aside from Lylat Wars on N64, this whole franchise has been terrible, and Lylat Wars was only fun for a few runs through. F-Zero? This game was fun for about 20 minutes. What Gamecube had was substandard versions of all of Nintendo's main franchises (Mario Sunshine, Celda, Mario Kart Double Dash). Also, complaining about how Wii doesn't have Donkey Kong or Starfox, would you want a game with quality like that Bongo Gamecube Donkey Kong game or that on foot Starfox Dinosaur game for Gamecube?

The Wii brought both an amazing 3D Mario experience (and a sequel on the way), and a 2D Mario title out in a few weeks. The best console version of Mario Kart is the Wii version. There's also the promise of a brand new motion based Zelda title, which hopefully won't be boring like the last two.

In addition, Wii has a downloadable service which gives access to most of Nintendo's top titles from the past, along with many third party titles. If you think those are better than Wii titles, they're available for play on the Wii.

I personally think that these so-called "Nintendo fans" who whine about how Nintendo betrayed them are actually Microsoft or Sony fans who are just pretending for trolling reasons. There is no logical reason why anyone could think Nintendo released better games for the Gamecube. Besides, Gamecube games can all be played on the Wii.

I don't agree with everything they do or say, but as a matter of fact, i still enjoy their games, and i really like their hardware... even if their consoles are "too limited" or not powerful enough, their innovations in controls and gameplay create a good balance... and they never had any "red ring of death" thing, of course... :)

But for me, there are two different Nintendo's: the creative side, and the business side...

The creative side remains as strong as ever, and Miyamoto is still the greatest ever in this industry... even if i'd like to see more Nintendo teams created, and even more "core" games released each year, their best Wii and DS games haven't disappointed me... quite the opposite in fact, they're amongst my all-time favourites...

The business side well... obviously, it's stronger than ever, with their profits at an unprecedented level... but for me, it's a corporation like any other corporation, and i think they may be really greedy... and i don't think that a "very rich Nintendo" will automatically become the industry's savior: their profits only do something really good for Yamauchi-san and the other shareholders, but not really for all the other gaming companies out there, and not really for the customers themselves...

To summarize what i may think: with all their billions, they could do way more...

Create new teams... have more 2nd party teams... do exclusive partnerships with 3rd party teams... offer some distribution and promotion deals to some of the best teams out there... lower the price of their games as a new kind of successful competition against Sony and Microsoft... lower the price of their hardware, too... or make it way more powerful so that everyone may easily port any great multiplatform game on their consoles as well...

But they're doin' great, whatever i or others may say, and i just can't wait for their 2010 releases anyway... :)

Nintendo is the only video game company that cares more about bringing fun and enjoyment to it's customers than making money, and ironically, they have the most money.

I would have agreed with you in the GameCube era. But now with the Wii I no longer have such faith that Nintendo really cares about games more then money. In the past good games sold high numbers of units. Even on the GameCube Nintendo's big franchises still raked in millions. Infact GameCube was just as profitable or probubly more so then Microsoft and many would argue even Sony.

But this generation what sells (WiiFit/WiiMusic/WiiPlay/WiiSports). These tech demo's made millions and millions. So cheap to develope and so much profit in return. So in my opinion Nintendo got greedy. I mean honestly did we need WiiFitPlus? only 6-new excersizes. Was Nintendo really trying to give us the best quality game with WiiFitPlus. Or how about WiiPlay? Was Nintendo really trying to give us a AAA+ game or were they simply trying to sell us another Wiimote? With WiiSportsResort was Nintendo really trying to give us another high quality title or were they simply trying to push people to pick up WiiMotionPlus so that Nintendo could make more money with future titles?

Nintendo sold out, lets face it. Its no longer about the next great StarFox/DonkeyKong game instead its about making profit by producing games with low overhead and selling them for huge profits!

Who can honestly defend WiiFitPlus? Honestly I bought WiiFit last year and WiiFitPlus just looks like another money grab!

Some people are so blinded and refuse to open their eyes.

To address "good" games selling a lot

Zelda: Wii - 5.34m GC - 4.55m (TP - 1.56m)
3D Mario: Wii - 8.17m GC - 6.28m
2D Mario: Wii - at least they released one
Metroid: Wii - 1.77m and counting (other M) - GC - 4.11m (prime had 2.83m of those)
Mario Kart: Wii - 17.84m (and the much better game) GC - 6.96m
Mario Strikers: Wii - 2.02m GC - 1.58m
Fire Emblem: not enough info, but it sold 10k more in Japan on Wii
Punch-Out!!: Wii = 600k
Paper Mario: Wii - 2.82m GC - 2.05m
Battalion Wars: not enough info, but it sold 10k more in Japan on Wii

So this list of 10 "good" games that outsold/matched their GC counterparts (and counting up quickly with unreleased games that have been announced) by your standards is wiped out by 3 games that hardly stole any development time at all just because they sold to the masses. I bet if those 3 games flopped instead you would be singing Nintendo's praise as they struggled to reach 20m hardware units sold. Not only that, but I would argue that almost every single one of those games is better on Wii than GC with Zelda and Paper Mario being about the only exception.

And if you are going to pull the DonkeyKong/StarFox crap, then why in the world do you praise the GC for bringing bastardized versions of those games out? You should be hating on it if anything. Nintendo hasn't made the "next great StarFox/DonkeyKong game" since the N64 days. Some franchises take a rest like punch-out!! did. That doesn't mean they abandonded gaming as a whole.

Finally, I will defend Wii Fit Plus no problem. Wii Fit Plus fixed the problems that the gamers/consumers complained about. The lack of routines and the ability to go from one exercise to the next quickly. People praise other companies for doing the same thing, and that was a big change for Wii Fit in terms of usabilty. And yea, it only has 6 new exercises, but you conveniently left out the 15 new games within it. Ultimately, Wii Fit Plus is what the consumer wanted.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

I agree, most big Nintendo games on Gamecube were dissapointments while almost all big Nintendo games on Wii delivered. (Except Twilight Princess, it's the worst Zelda I have ever played)

One thing I disagree on is Lylatwars. That game was epic and had tons of replayability, don't forget that. And Wind Waker was better than Twilight Princess. Zelda Wii will blow both out of the water though.

I LOVE ICELAND!
