Insomniac: PS3 won't be maxed out for 2-3 years

Sony's console "still feels like a young system," says Resistance dev

Insomniac senior community manager James Stevenson has said it could take another two to three years before developers truly start to max out the PS3.

"There's always ways we can become more efficient. The PlayStation platforms are built with a very high ceiling and I think that's part of the success Sony has had in creating these platforms with really long life spans," said Stevenson.

"The first couple of years are all about developers getting games up and working. You see what Naughty Dog has had the chance to do in the past two years. You've seen what we've been able to do in that time. This is where it gets exciting.

"The PS3 still feels like a young system and I feel like it's finally hitting its prime. You've got the Slim, it's at a good price point now and sales are really picking up.

"I still think you're not going to see the PS3 really maxed out for another two to three years. We're using all of the PS3 right now, but you can always be more efficient in the way you use it."

Insomniac is gearing up to release Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time on November 6. Check out our review here.

Cool I am glad the PS3 Slim SALES have made them more confident + the PS2 wasn't maxed out for 4 years, so PS3 won't be either

Wow this is unexpected. Didn't the chick from Naughty Dog say they used 100% of PS3's power for Uncharted 2.?

Max it out for us Insomniac!!! It's time for a fresh franchise after Ratchet....just please don't make another Resistance.

^ 100% but not as efficiently as it could be

^^lol goddamn they choose their words properly.

You can never max out a console, you can just get to a point where the only updates you can with a new game are so small and meaningless that there isn't much point in doing them. Like if Sony Santa Monica were to do God of War III on the PS2, it would only look very little better than God of War II, because it already pushes the console so much.

And I think it would be at least 3 years before a PS3 developers get's to that point.

Naughty Dog said that they are using 100% of the PS3's hardware, not using HW of it's capabilities.

What that means is that they are using all of the SPUs and the GPU, something that no other studio have done before.

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

Yeah, a lot of games (mostly exclusives) will be able to use 100% of the power on any given console, but like he said, their are always ways to be more efficient. Sony's last 2 consoles have been relatively difficult to program for and developers need time to figure out how to make proper use of the architecture. This is why we see such vast improvements as the generation progresses.

Just compare the late PS2 games to the early gen games.

So it'll take them 6-7 games to max out the hardware? Naughty Dog did it in 2!

Tease.

I'd say that Uncharted 2 is first game that really tapped what PS3 is capable of. Naughty dog themselves said that Uncharted is using the 100% of the PS3 power, but they can tweak and polish the code in a way that those 100% will translate to +- 70-75% of what can be achieved.

So we have a lot to look forward to :)

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

@squilliam

Uncharted 2 hasn't maxed the PS3 out

not when FF13 looks better than it

{Runs like the wind}
