Forums - Sales - Microsoft: on PS3s recent sales surge "We expect it to be short-term and we expect them to be back down to third place soon like they’ve always been.”

Its PR i dont expect them to actually use logic.

But its generally hard to play catch up when the 360 had been on the market by itself for a year with no "next gen" console competition.

Oh well. Launches aligned PS3 > 360. Thats really all that matters to us who want to discuss or analyze console comparison sales like grown ups.

Flame bait thread from flame bait blog post.

Also, if you want to align launches, I can also say that since the PS3 launched, the Xbox 360 has outsold it every year and the gap from launch (of just 5.5 million) has kept increasing (which if the console was really doing better it would be eroding that from the get go).  Aligned launches is a red herring and completely moot.  Don't ever try to bring up something as silly and useless as that again.

Also, this blog has it wrong.  The Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by ~800,000 units for the entirety of 2008.

And finally, as has been stressed many times to all the ignorant posters in this thread, he is speaking of NPD, aka USA sales of which the 360 is already above the PS3 Slim again, just as the PR person said....

He can only be saying this if he knows something we dont... otherwise it isnt happening "soon" and he will be wrong

And im laughing at Cross-x and all the others complaining of MS arrogance... Sony arrogance at the outset of this gen and up until relatively mecently was staggering!

Please, keep preaching. Some folks weren't in church yesterday. Muchas gracias.

They've both been heavily arrogant, but that's not to excuse Microsoft for doing so here.

I don't think MS was being arrogant here.  Maybe a little, but they were mostly just stating the facts about the situation (for US).

^Is that really the official quote? Because I've seen at least 2 or 3 other articles about the NPD and never saw any mention of that little jibe at the end.

Keep on crying Microsoft, we love your tears.

I collect them in a cup and pour them on my old XBOX.

I kid I kid....if I did that, I wouldn't be able to play Ninja Gaiden.

I don't think MS is the one crying here.

I'm sorry to bring it up again... but regardless of what anyone says this gen, nothing will ever compare to the:

"The next gen starts when we say so"

I know its old but it SET THE MOOD of the gen, so please... cut the holier than thou bull.

Can I get an amen?

If MS is crying, is SONY getting ready to commit suicide after whats happened in this gen?

Well the length of anything such as this is always hard to determine. I mean even though 360 got sizable increases due to the $200 Arcade, the longevity of the boost was not that high. By the summer of 2009, it was getting back to where it was. Now after the Slim it is back to "old" levels. Something potentially similar could happen to PS3 where it goes through the holiday season strong and then slowly starts to wane like the 360 did.

However, I think the strongest thing against PS3 right now is getting through the holiday season. There's always the potential that because it had such a strong reaction to the price drop that come the holiday season it won't see similar increases. Basically the effect that all those who "wanted" to get one already got them. If you need a scenario check Japan's holiday season for PS3 after the 40gb. This is really the only scenario I'm seeing that could potentially cause something like this but I don't see it as likely right now.

Once we hit 2010 it'll be harder to gear what is going on as I see 2010 being on sales level comparable to that of 2008. Just give the magnitude of the software across all platforms and the new "stuff" coming out for all different consoles... we could see quite a resurgence in the gaming industry. Let's just see how these holidays play out first though.
