Forums - Nintendo - Is the Wii bubble about to burst?

I think it was the dumbest move they can make taking monster hunter 3 off the ps3.

There is no doubt that the first party games are a major strength to Nintendo and they will do well. Of course they will sell systems. But what happens when "Joe" who has a Wii keeps hearing about this great game that is made by a 3rd party dev and is only on one or both of the other consoles with no plans to make it for the Wii since their first Wii game (which was for example a multi platform game) bombed while the other two consoles got solid sales?

It's just a different way to look at the situation and for the wii to truly dominate this gen (Which they have a great chance to do so with their record setting sales) they will need strong 3rd party support to turn even more gamers to their console. If either the Xbox or PS3 gets extremely great 3rd party games that the Wii doesn't go, it could change what people will buy for consoles in the years to come.

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

Great explanation Rol.

@leo-j

I agree for the reason that the games quality I feel will go down

Online (proper online...not that wii codes crap) would've been really cool

WII - 18.3 Million

Xbox 360 - 15 Million

Playstation 3 - 8.5 Million

Attention RolStoppable: It was sarcasm.

But seriously, third parties are stupid. At least if they have successful games on the Wii, they'll be motivated.

Well there is some potentially good third party games coming out before Christmas (No More Heroes, SoulCalibur Legends, Nights, Zack & Wiki, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles). It is true that there isn't that much announced for further down the pipeline, but I think that most publishers are waiting to see how this turn out this holiday season. If Nintendo delivers on their promises of more Wiis in stores, particularly in the US, they may be able to substantially narrow the 360s lead in the US which would make Western developers start to take the Wii more seriously.

If the PS3 doesn't have a substantial turn around this holiday season (and now with the latest price cut it does have a chance) I think that Japanese developers will start backpedaling on their PS3 exclusives and if that happens I think they'll shift more of their resources to the Wii rather than the 360 given the 360's utter irrelevance in Japan.

I think that it's pretty certain that the 360 will have a decent, but not spectacular holiday season, even with Halo 3. So the question comes down to, how many units can Nintendo ship and how many families are willing to spend $400 on a single Christmas gift.

Darthevidem,

One thing that I can see coming out of this generation is a market for 2 systems to sell very well that offer differing ways to play the games. Those who crave for cutting edge graphics and pushing the envelope can get it with either the PS3 or the 360, but those who want a game that uses the Wii's control scheme and makes it alot of fun to play could be a reason for someone to get two consoles. I think this gen we will see an even bigger market that will go for two consoles instead of just one.

Basically have the 3rd parties focus on specific games for two consoles, but make it so that the Wii version is specific and focuses on the gameplay enjoyment with the Wii mote and nunchuck, and then another version for the PS3/360 that focuses on the graphics, the size limits and just pushing as hard as they can. Of course they may have similar objectives but should be only very loosely related to the Wii version of the game. And if they have fans of one game they may encourage them to pick up the other version if they have the other console.

Honestly, in the measures that matter (profit) it is far more likely that a PS3 or XBox 360 game will bomb than a Wii game ...

For fairly similar games you are looking at (roughly) 4 times the cost for a PS3/XBox 360 game than for a Wii game; this means that if a game on the Wii would break even at 125,000 units it will break even at 500,000 units on the PS3/XBox 360, and if a game will break even at 250,000 units on the Wii it would take 1,000,000 units to break even on the PS3/XBox 360. Now, compare the number of games on the Wii that have failed to make 125,000 (worldwide) on the Wii to the number of games that failed to make 500,000 on the PS3/XBox 360 (then compare the number of games that have failed to make 250,000 on the Wii to those that failed to make 1,000,000 on the PS3/XBox 360).

I was going to comment on the article, but I noticed it was from Tech.co.uk

They have been predicting the Wii bubble burst since March, if I remember correctly.
