There is no doubt that the first party games are a major strength to Nintendo and they will do well. Of course they will sell systems. But what happens when "Joe" who has a Wii keeps hearing about this great game that is made by a 3rd party dev and is only on one or both of the other consoles with no plans to make it for the Wii since their first Wii game (which was for example a multi platform game) bombed while the other two consoles got solid sales?

It's just a different way to look at the situation and for the wii to truly dominate this gen (Which they have a great chance to do so with their record setting sales) they will need strong 3rd party support to turn even more gamers to their console. If either the Xbox or PS3 gets extremely great 3rd party games that the Wii doesn't go, it could change what people will buy for consoles in the years to come.

Honestly, in the measures that matter (profit) it is far more likely that a PS3 or XBox 360 game will bomb than a Wii game ...

For fairly similar games you are looking at (roughly) 4 times the cost for a PS3/XBox 360 game than for a Wii game; this means that if a game on the Wii would break even at 125,000 units it will break even at 500,000 units on the PS3/XBox 360, and if a game will break even at 250,000 units on the Wii it would take 1,000,000 units to break even on the PS3/XBox 360. Now, compare the number of games on the Wii that have failed to make 125,000 (worldwide) on the Wii to the number of games that failed to make 500,000 on the PS3/XBox 360 (then compare the number of games that have failed to make 250,000 on the Wii to those that failed to make 1,000,000 on the PS3/XBox 360).
