Windows sales 'please' Microsoft

Microsoft launched Windows 7 earlier in the week

Microsoft has said it is "pleased" with the "strong consumer demand" for its new Windows 7 operating system.

The new operating system was rolled out worldwide on 22 October.

Windows 7 was not included in its results from July to September, for which it reported net profits of $3.57bn (£2.18bn), down 18% from 2008.

Microsoft blamed its 14% fall in revenue on its policy of promising free Windows upgrades to people who bought new PCs during the summer.

'Tough conditions'

The computers came with Vista installed on them, but customers were told they would receive upgrades to Windows 7 when the new system was launched.

Microsoft deferred the revenue from the sales of those Vista systems. If it had not done so, revenue would only have declined by 4%.

The results were still better than had been expected.

Microsoft said reducing costs had helped it to cope with "tough overall economic conditions".

It'll mean fuck all for gaming, Microsoft's focus is firmly on the 360 for that.

Oh, and for anyone interested in the various OS/ browser market shares and trends, try these links-

Well, it is certainly a nice upgrade, I don't know if it means much for gaming, but reducing the load from the OS might speed stuff up

Oviously theres a strong demand for it since most computers sold the last whatever years , forced people to use vista. So alot of people are in dire need to upgrade from that piece of shit OS.

Those ppl couldve "downgraded" to XP like I did. Anyways, in the past yr or so, Vista wasn't as bad as ppl and the media made it out to seem. OT, Thats good to hear, I upgraded to 7 from XP and man is it awesome, the looks of Vista with the performance of XP, simply amazing.

Yeah, the whole Vista thing has been blown massively out of proportion

Vista wasn't bad. I prefer it to 7, and XP.

Windows 7 is not worth full retail price. I could get it for free via an MSDN thing but I'm not going to.

Well I got it for half price thanks the cheap pre-orders, dunno if it is worth it, I will wait to see if it improves performance in general
