6/10
Heavenly Sword is an extremely well put together game with good graphics, excellent cinematography, and solid gameplay. The music and sound effects are adequate, but unremarkable. The storyline, script, and dialog are some of the worst in modern gaming history, although the voice acting is well done.
The gameplay makes impressive use of the SIXAXIS controls. They are tricky to get the hang of, but work much better than most PS3 implementations of the motion controls once you learn it. The system utilizing the motion controls is called "aftertouch". Basically after you use a ranged attack, you can control the object as a guided missile.
The hack and slash combat system gets repetitive and boring, but at least mixes it up a little bit with 3 different "stances", one for breaking through blocks, one for quick attacks, and one for extended range attacks. There is also a counter system that is a little tricky to execute.
Some of the cutscenes can be pretty gruesome and disgusting, even though the title is only rated T for teens. The game is set in a primitive medieval world, with some fantasy elements, but also horror and more brutal portrayals of reality than other games in similar settings.
I found the script uncompelling, and felt I was being dragged through a torturesome storyline just to get to play the next level. The emphasis in this game was obviously on finding people talented in graphic design and cinematography, not writing talent. It's really a pity, because this game had the potential to be much better. But it does show what the PS3 is capable of, and is a preview of better games to come.
This title is a good option as a rental, but probably not a good choice for your PS3 library now that better titles are coming out.
