my hypothesis on this is:

the people that feel the most annoyed by so called "fanboys" (I'd argue that the phenomenon is neither gender nor age related and is called "fanaticism" in the "real" world) in most cases are "fanboys"

Here's something fanboys on both sides of the HD war can use:
when a game - exclusive or otherwise - receives critical acclaim from reviewers, and super-hype because of that much to the annoyance of those on the opposing side, here's something you can say:

"The reason the game scored so highly is due to the comparative lack of good games on that system."

Here's an example:
PS3 warrior: "Everyone must buy U2! 96 on metacritic!!! PS3 best platform evar!!!" and makes 50k threads on it
reply: "Well, that's only because all the rest of the games on that platform are bad, and when a decent game finally comes out it has positive reviews all over it like flies on stink."

or:
X360 Berserker: "Bayonetta on X360 got 2 points more on Famitsu than the PS3 version!!! the PS3 version must be manufactured from pure suck!!" and makes 50k threads on it
reply: "Well, that's only because all the rest of the games on that platform are bad, and when a decent game finally comes out it has positive reviews all over it like flies on stink."

I really should charge people for this advice, but I'm feeling generous today.

It was never yours to begin with. The day you side with a corporation over their goods is the day you lay naked and neglected on the street when trying to get their affection.

FinalEvangelion pretty much knocked it on the head, but I might add a further point that may be adding fuel to the PS3 hype bonfire. For most of this generation, and particularly since the last X360 price cut, PS3 supporters have had to put up with a lot of 'ps3 is d0med' threads and general negativity, and some of the trolling will be as 'payback' to those 360 and Wii fanboys that were responsible for those previous threads.

I'm not saying its right, but thats a contributing factor. Not dissimilar to a sports team who are wooden spooners for a few years in a row finally winning a championship and saying 'In your face!' to all the doubters and knockers. It'll die down eventually once the wounds are healed.

Maybe we should REALLY piss them off by bringing back the slogan.

PS3 fanboys are often childish, but they aren't worse than other fanboys. Maybe Nintendo fanboys are currently the fairest, but that's only because Wii and DS are so strong they don't need to flare.

It gets really loud sometimes in Uncharted 2.
