Forums - Nintendo - Good riddance to everyone who does "core game tests."

Every game released is a test of the market.

1).  Not at all!  I like the games I like and I play and enjoy them.  If others don't like those games, that's fine.  Doesn't upset me one bit and why should it?

2).  Wow.  I'd really like to know what games you consider to be "hardcore".  Because by what I perceive to be the standard definition, I can think of quite a few...

3).  Dude, you're gonna get that in every industry.  More people watch Fox News than Democracy Now!, more people buy GamePro than Play Magazine, more people buy 50 cent and Lil' Wayne albums than Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Little Brother, or Immortal Technique.  Some products cater to niche markets and/or like-minded individuals while others are more mainstream and can reach more people.

4). But these 3rd parties are continuing their support.  Let's take the games you mentioned earlier:

             A.  No More Heroes - Getting a sequel and Suda 51's best selling game to date

             B.  Tales of Symphona - Getting Tales of Graces, a mothership Tales title (unlike the DotNW spinoff), in just a few short months

             C.  MadWorld - Sega's John Clark says that MadWorld sold well enough that Sega is ready to "invest in high quality, new IP."

             D.  The Conduit - as we speak, Gladiator and The Grinder, are deep in development...

             E.  Okami - This game exceeded Capcoms expectations and they're pleased with sales - pretty decent for a game that flopped on       PS2.     Just released in Japan and sold 25k first week.  Nice numbers for a 3 year old port.

Cool...I didnt know about the sequels I guess either Wii development is even cheaper than iphone development or some studios are willing to continue to loose money until they are bankrupt...but your right as long as they continue to pump them out why should I care if they are still around next generation.  Still even though I will be buying most of them I would be willing to bet that the combined sales of all those sequels you mentioned wont top 1m either and its just sad.

I'm guessing you just don't know how much Iphone development costs.  I mean what with financial records we can actually see if companies are performing well or not.

Those games all made money.  Hell the No More Heroes guys threw a party.  Who throws a party when they lose money?

What do you mean, Metroid Prime 3 = core game test? Where's the logic in that?

Actually, I think some "testing", if we should call it that, are ok as long as you try and make that product a full product, and as good and attractive as possible. I mean, every game is tested the moment it releases. I think Sega consider some of their Wii core games being tests.

The problem occurs when you tell the costumer that it's a test product, or make them feel that way. That way, the costumer may not consider the product being a complete product, or they may feel like they are guinea pigs. I believe many feel that way about DSE.

Wii fans don't buy core "test" games, I agree with them. Keep it up. Show these developers that your fanbase has shown it can support 3rd party games such as :

MH3
No more heroes
mario and Sonic
carnavel games
RE4 Wii

and the better the game, the more they sale, MH3 is close to a million now.

This 100%.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

Reasons I'm not interested in dead space extraction, even though I think it should be decent:

1) I just finished RE4, 5 years late sure, but its still a freaking awesome game, its choke full of content and dirt cheap, I'm not sure DPE can live up to this.

2) DPE is reviewed as short and simple-ish, I just read it as short and expensive

3) Its a prequel to a fucking game on other platforms?? WHAT?? ... Which sorta means they don't have enough content to warrant a full game in those platforms, since Wii is a 'toy' platform, its ok to throw half baked ideas over here at full price.

I usually think companies say 'test' to save face, their game can't sell, don't fucking sell tests at full price.

The only thing that gives me comfort at night, when i realise Wii 3rd party games on the whole aren't successful, is that Sony and MS have screwed themselves into a narrow userbase.

Goodluck gettin those casuals, Wii's got 90% of them.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I agree that way too many companies have taken the "core game tests" route on the Wii... hell, even Nintendo themselves have been guilty of going that route as well.

Spoiler: It's called Metroid Prime 3! :P

that's f---ing harsh for a company thats given us Punch Out and Sin and Punishment 2.

I hope you go to confession for that sin

I don't like that "test" stuff either, if developers didn't want to take a risk in making a Wii game then they should have made their game GOOD, not a mediocre "test", as if that was any indication of what people want. If a game was good and appealing it would get people interested.

for me personally, even if Dead Space Extraction got awsome reviews i still wouldn't want it, it's an unappealing game to (and many others by the looks of those sales). also, i tend to lose intrest in a game that's been marked as a test game.

I do agree that test games deserve bad sales, but i don't agree that developers deserve to shut down, many hardworking people would lose their jobs that way and they didn't have much of a say on what to create as their game.

but yeah, test games suck!

so, let me get this straight... the game isn't "good", not due to review, but due to the fact it was marked as an 'test" game?

What about those un-'test' games who also recieved good reviews? NHM, Zak and Wiki? Do they also deserve bad sales?

Zack & Wiki was a colossal failure but No More Heroes wasn't. It sold over 300,000 copies. On top of that, it was Suda51's best selling game.
