Careful you don't confuse American English with Internet Forum American English, and nindeed Internet Forum English in its entirety. Even worse than insure/ensure is "they're/there/their", "your/you're" and "where/were/we're". And it doesn't come exclusively from American posters.

I do think that the OP worded his question very poorly.  He should have thought it through.

The 'u' and the 're' instead of 'er' (theatre/theater) are French leftovers. I'm English and happy to be rid of them. It's not like we haven't changed our own language over the years or dost thou thinketh differently?

Maybe they changed it so they didn't have to pay royalties or 'republicties' as they're called in America.

I'm pretty sure most of the attacks on the Americans have been tongue in cheek =P
