The 'u' and the 're' instead of 'er' (theatre/theater) are French leftovers. I'm English and happy to be rid of them. It's not like we haven't changed our own language over the years or dost thou thinketh differently?
Maybe they changed it so they didn't have to pay royalties or 'republicties' as they're called in America.
