Forums - Microsoft - Buy Xbox 360 HD-DVD, get 9 HD-DVDs for free!

@dallas:

The deal isn't specific to the HD-DVD addon drive. It is a promotion for HD-DVD players in general, and it is a great promotion. What is the point of arguing about it?

EDIT:  Okay, I see that the Heroes offer IS specific to the 360 addon drive, and the 2 free movies offer is kind of separate and appears to be technically offered only for standalone players.  Still, the point stands.

I am revising my list ... I am gonna get these instead ...

Transformers
The Warriors
King Kong
Heroes
Babel
Pitch Black
Full Metal Jacket
Darkman
The Frighteners

I'm off for the night ... hopefully. I definitely look forward to see how good my debating skills will be.

@madskillz:

You might want to hold off on Full Metal Jacket. I think a new version is being released with the Kubrick collection.

I'm not saying that this isn't a good deal, but my point is that consumers would be wise to consider the big picture, especially when these kneejerk go out and buy knind of promotions are happening. Look, if you think that it is a great deal and are exited about HD-DVD go nuts and get some more movies.

Yeah, I saw that ... and I am thinking about holding off on the 5 free HD-DVDs for a lil while - they may come out with a new free list. I am not big on a lot of those movies (I love Pitch Black) ... but free is free.

@madskillz:

Usually, the promotion list lasts for a specific period of time and is based on your purchase date. Therefore, if you are purchasing now, you will most likely have to select from the current list. The Deluxe Edition of Full Metal Jacket actually comes out this week, and has some added features. Hopefully the quality of the transfer will improve on the original version, as it's apparently one of the worst HD-DVDs out there...

That's not the way I roll. If it's a good deal - I was toying with getting an HD-DVD add-on for my 360 for at least two months. I wanted to get it to see if I was ready to go into HD. I have a DiSH HD-DVR and love it. I have an HD setup - 1080i projector on my 360 and HD-DVR - so I am like 'Why not?' The main thing is ... value. And without any movies too, I was like 'Hmmm ... lemme think about this.' Now, I could have at least 9 HD-DVDs (5 later) and get the HD-DVD drive for free. What do I gain? Do the math - at $25 a pop, I get at the very least 6 HD-DVDs. That is ... $160, tax included. Now, I get Heroes for $99 - and guess what? I have spent $270 on disks alone! I look at it as being a free HD-DVD giveaway that I will beg-borrow-and-steal to have. What if it flops? Who cares? I will have gotten my usefulness out of it with those movies - and a few others I snag. For the cost of the drive - $190, I am getting an additional $260 worth of stuff - mind you, that I can easily flip, further lowering my out-of-pocket expense.

I am looking at this as a business deal - one that I will use to my full advantage.

Hmmm ... I'll keep that in mind. I may just select another film anyhow ... Full Metal Jacket was on the list of 5 free films I can snag. I was more interested in just reselling them and getting the Bourne movies, The Matrix and 300.

Speaking of - I would love to get Star Wars/Lord of the Rings/Indiana Jones on HD-DVD or BR ... now, that will make me get a PS3 if they are just on BR ...

@madskillz:

If you have any interest, I HIGHLY recommend the Hot Fuzz HD-DVD. Fantastic.

Star Wars is Fox, which is currently Blu-ray exclusive. Lord of the Rings is New Line, which is currently platform-agnostic. Indiana Jones is Paramount which is currently HD-DVD exclusive, but are Spielberg movies which are apparently platform-agnostic. Regardless, I don't think we'll see HD releases of any of these films until a clearer picture emerges of who will be the victor, or until the market penetration is significantly higher for both formats (in which case dual-format releases are likely).
