Forums - Gaming - It is time for Shigeru Miyamoto to retire (Malstrom)

Normally i like what the man has to write, this is not one of those times.

So WiiMusic wasn't the be all and end all of video games, who cares? It was a novel idea, that may not have worked as well as it should have. It takes balls to try something new, and that is something Shiggy has in spades. Did LBP blow the socks off of the world? Not so much, but I still respect the hell out of Sony for trying something outside of their comfort zone, because THAT is what the industry used to be like.
Now companies pander to the hardcore or the casual, milking the same ideas until they stop selling then latching onto whatever buzzword seems to be popular at the time. Sandbox. Epic. Photo realism. HD. None of those things make games any better, any more than different paints will make an artist any better. Video games must come from the soul to be great, they must be labors of love. Shiggy loves his work, and it shows every time he makes a game or takes a stage

wow this made me realise

what about when Siggy dies?!

I can't imagine that

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

This article makes me want to burn the author's body in effigy to Nintendo.

No, seriously though. Really? ...Really?

In an interview several months ago, he said that he will be making games until the day he dies.

Pixel Art can be fun.

@supermario128

I'm afraid, when it happens, maybe I will stop gaming

Nintendo secretly killed Yokoi after Virtual Boy...

(too soon?)

Isn't he correct though? I don't agree with the end result of Miyamoto retiring, but other than that, everything he said seems to be relatively true.

-User generated content does not have the market of traditional games as of yet.

-A game Nintendo put out as a completely user created experience was seen as a massive Fall dissappointment for Nintendo.

-Nintendo has been reusing a lot of their existing franchises to offer new gameplay experiences instead of just creating new franchises.

-Other forms of entertainment have seen little to no success by giving the customer control over the content.

-That video is frighteningly stupid and I don't think anyone other than the most masochistic of us would want that.

I mean does anyone really think the expanded audience has any interest in creating levels? This seems aimed towards us, the forumgoers with our dreams of developing games and always stubbornly wanting our way.

He has some points. Nintendo is not about user generated content.

but he could also be misinterpreting Miyamoto. he said that miyamoto was contradicting himself. but what if Miyamoto simply wants to make a game with user generated content AND professional content? like... an EDITOR?

I LOVE ICELAND!

They shouldn't have too many problems.  The guy has been taking a more and more hands off approach as he's gone.  He's really nurtured the inhouse dev guys.  None of them will really probably make a giant name for themselves but they'll be competant successors.

It's the generation after that i'd be worried about.  Of course we'll all be like 60-70 by then.
