5.5 mil...do-able...I think.

5.5 million is more than do-able. It's downright likely at this point.
If PS3 sells the same amount of units as 360 did last year for the period remaining for this calander year and the 360 does the same for PS3's 08 numbers, that will bring the gap down to 5.3 million. However currently PS3 is tracking well above 360's 08 numbers while the 360 is tracking a bit below PS3's. Unless something can change these two patterns then the gap between the two consoles could very well be below 5 million by January.
After that I would guess that Sony has another 9 months of 2010 to bring down the gap another 2 million or so before Microsoft begins their counterattack with Natal. Whether their counterattack will be successful or if Sony will have a counterattack of their own for Natal will be the big decider for 2nd place this generation I think.

Meh, likely...but then again, you are betting on a market that at this point is not really predictable. My bet is it will be a little more than 5.5...but we shall see.
Put Seihyouken post in the OP Zorrox
or rephrase it as he has said it really in a way that people can understand!
All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey
if PS3 can do more than XBOX360 of last yr in last week of November n whole of December than they sure can put out some very very impressive numbers for this yr.
The XBox 360 sales for 2009 are really dropping off and they have fallen behind the PS3 sales for 2008. The XBox 360 sales of 2009 are tailing off and will be well down on last year's peak sales.
The PS3 sales of 2009 are killing the XBOx 360 sales of 2008.
ZorroX, I think you're too positive about PS3 and too negative about Xbox 360.
Breaking it up into the 3 different regios:
Last week PS3 was below what Xbox 360 sold last year in the same week. I take last week's numbers because PS3's numbers for this week got a bump from Uncharted so doesn't give a good picture of its normal sales level. Xbox 360's sales were at the same level, this is an indication both will sell close to each other for the rest of the year in the Americas. Now looking at the releases for the rest of the year Xbox 360 got some big exclusives left (Forza 3, Left4Dead 2 and 2nd downloadable episode of GTA IV), while PS3 just had its last one released. While in the coming weeks the effect of Uncharted 2 fades Xbox 360 will see its own bumps based on those exclusives, which most likely will put it above PS3 then. Of course there are also some big multiplatform releases, with Modern Warfare 2 being by far the biggest. Taking the Xbox 360 bundle and the preorder charts into account it seems like that one will also have a bigger impact on Xbox 360. All in all I expect Xbox 360 to slightly outsell PS3 in the US. Because of the bigger competition between both platforms neither will reach Xbox 360's last years numbers, I'd say about 2,2-2,5 million for PS3 and 2,3-2,7 million for Xbox 360.
In Others I once again look at last weeks numbers for comparison to last years numbers. PS3 is about even with Xbox 360's numbers and slightly ahead of its own numbers from last year. Xbox 360 is only selling close to 50% of last years numbers, but selling more than it did it 2007 when it ended up selling 1,1 million. I expect PS3 to slightly outsell Xbox 360's last year numbers because Xbox 360 this year won't match PS3's last years numbers so it has less competition. This puts my expectations for PS3 between 2,2 and 2,5 million and Xbox 360 between 1,4 and 1,6 million.
In Japan Xbox 360 will probably sell close to 100k, PS3 will sell somewhere between 500-800k depending on how succesful Final Fantasy XIII ends up.
All combined my numbers for both platforms are:
PS3: Upper limit is 5,8 million, lower limit 4,9 million.
Xbox 360: Upper limit 4,4 million, lower limit 3,8 million.
And a difference between both platforms ranging from 5,2 and 6,7 million.
Today gap is about 7.12 million in 360 favor.
At the week before Back Friday the gap will be about 6.35 million in 360 favor.
I predict.
First of all, you likely to forget that x360 already 4 years on the market. 4 years, and already had 199$ entry price and 299$ price for main model.
This year, it just improved value of main x360 model with adding 60GB, like Sony did with PS3 last year.
Why would x360 sales increase???
PS3 had LittleBigPlanet, Motorstorm:PR, Resistance 2, Valkyria Chronicles, Naruto:UNS last year. That helped PS3 in sales, but it didn`t move that much units, compared to 2007 year, where PS3 got a new entry price at 399$.
Forza 2 sold mostly thanks to bundles, and Japan sales are really poor. I`m not sure, how big this game will be in west, since GT5 is already coming in March.
L4D2 also had it`s problems.
Yes, MW2 should help x360 in sales, but i expect that a 399$ MW2 bundle will be just selling to hardcore MW fans. I mean, to same x360 owners. Yes, it`s still a sale, but i don`t believe, that there are many people left out there, who haven`t played CoD4:MW and now will buy a 399$ costing x360 for MW2.
I`ve seen German numbers, where PS3 outsell x360 during August-September by 4 times. Also in Australia PS3 is doing much better, compared to x360 since slim launch.
Anyway, we will see. So far, PS3 is doing better, than x360 last year. And x360 is doing worse, than PS3 last year.
I really, don`t see why x360 sales would increase on 4th year, considering high competition from PS3 side this year.

So you're saying it will outsell Xbox 360 by 770k in the coming 5 weeks or 155k per week? It didn't even outsell it by that much this week with the Uncharted bump, how the hell is it going to outsell it by that much in the coming weeks? Barring adjustments to the current numbers your prediction has no chance of becoming true.
