But how did Nintendo make it happen?Certainly there was maybe even better games than Mario, and from 80s to this day there certainly is better games than Mario series, but you see only Mario in tv (like Simpsons), and EVERYONE knows Mario.

Please, please tell me you've played the game at least.

Marios?Almost all of them, not N64 only I think.

Well, back then, the choices of good games weren't that many so people stuck with the good franchises. I dont think any Mario besides the original SMB has broken 10 mil yet so I'd say it has shrunk a bit from the original but managed to retain the rest of it's fans with a few old timers quitting and newcomers joining.

Gotta give credit to Miyamoto though. It's tough for a series to maintain itself for so long.

Halo is looing to do the same down the line. All the numbered halos are 9-10 mill sold.

Even if he played it, the context could be lost. If he played it after playing a modern Hd game SMb could seem quaint or outdated. Then audience of this generation has a different viewpoint.  On the flipside, I didn't play Atari Pitfall until after playing countless SNES games. A classic can stand the test of time. I still play SMB and consider it to be one of the best of all time.

It might be tough, but to understand it, you have to unlearn everything you knew about video games, and then play it.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario World
Super Mario Land
Super Mario 64
New Super Mario Bros. DS

Have all topped 10 million in sales. And New Super Mario Bros. Wii is going to join that. And Mario Kart is a huge franchise in its own right too.

Halo won't be half the franchise it is ten years from now. Mario outlasts everything.

I also have to add that mario also benefits from the "oldest is best" mentality the same way Harvard is often viewed as the best American College.

What are all these "better than Mario games from the 80s" that you're talking about anyway?

I had the original NES, and Mario was always one of the best games. When Super Mario Bros. 3 came out everyone agreed it was the best game on the system.

Super Mario 64 was the best game ever released when it came out, and play it today compare it to other 3D platformers from that era -- it has aged so much better it's not even funny.

The only time a Mario game came out that wasn't best in class was Super Mario Sunshine, which was still a good game, just not Mario 64/Mario 3 level good.

Maybe, but Mario platformers have always been good. I have loved every Mario Platformer that I played. The Kart and smash franchises are also always good. It may not be oldest is best, but a sign of confidance in the reliability of those franchises.
