Forums - Nintendo - Is 3D Mario doomed?

I think this thread is a little too extreme.  Sure, 3D Mario games don't sell as well as 2D Mario games, but what games do?

11.89 million

7.78 million

6.28 million

8.14 million

If that's doomed, then the videogame industry is in turmoil.  Because most games don't perform as well the ones above at all.

Yeah, might as well drop Zelda because it's not selling as much as wii Play.

Is NSMB even made by the SMG team? I don't think so. It seems we can have our cake (2d mario) and eat it too (uh, 3d mario... but I always thought this a strange expression anyway)

How do you know that?  Gotta link or you just trolling?  Sounds like you're just making things up because that can't be true.

3D games are the standard, and Mario will always be represented in that format. Not only that, but Mario's flagship games will always be in 3D. This is Mario's first real 2D game on a console since what, the SNES? No, 3D is going nowhere.

And hey, am I the only one who thinks Galaxy 2 will beat the 2D game? To be blunt, I'm waaaaaay more excited about Galaxy. I had fun with the DS Mario game, but something about it on the Wii ... I dunno. Something tells me it won't do numbers anywhere near what the DS game did. And I'm thinking more people want Galaxy. Both games will be hits, no matter what.

No way Galaxy 2 is gonna sell better than NSMBWii - no way.  SMG2 is not gonna perform better because you're more interested in it.  And we already know that NSMBWii won't sell as well as NSMB on DS - that much is obvious.

Many people are missing the point.. Answer me this:

Will the flagship Mario title on Wii2 be 2D or 3D? Which would be more likely to be a launch title?

Neither? We haven't seen Mario at a console launch in a long time.

I don't think Mario even needs to be released as a launch title. They have (or should make) other IPs that will sell hardware, like the Wii Series, or Touch! Gen (Brain Age, Nintendogs). The next big launch title should show off what the console can do.

Either way, I'm sure 3D Mario will make his appearance next gen.

No. Simply because there's still a large market for it.

Pixel Art can be fun.

I think Wii 2 might see a new 2D Mario at/near launch, its easier to developp in 2D then in 3D and the costs associated with it are much less, plus 2D Mario's are amazing sellers

Can we wait for some sales first, please?

When (if?) NSMBWii hits Galaxy's life-to-date sales in a fraction of the time, then we can talk.

And regarding your latter question, i would say 3D would be more likely to be a launch title, since you want your launch titles to be a good representation of what your hardware can do. Though i suppose if Nintendo's next console is mostly focused on beefing up the graphics, they could do a balls-to-the-wall HD Sprites thing to expo the hardware capabilities, but Nintendo generally doesn't go in for that sort of thing.

I agree with you that the launch titles should represent what the system can do, but it also comes down to Nintendo's focus.  The 2D Marios reach a broader audience than the 3D Marios, and reaching out to new gamers is what Nintendo has been doing with the DS and Wii, rather than going for technical prowess.  If Nintendo's next console is more about reaching even more gamers, I expect them to lead of with a 2D Mario rather than a 3D one.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi
