And regarding your latter question, i would say 3D would be more likely to be a launch title, since you want your launch titles to be a good representation of what your hardware can do. Though i suppose if Nintendo's next console is mostly focused on beefing up the graphics, they could do a balls-to-the-wall HD Sprites thing to expo the hardware capabilities, but Nintendo generally doesn't go in for that sort of thing. |
I agree with you that the launch titles should represent what the system can do, but it also comes down to Nintendo's focus. The 2D Marios reach a broader audience than the 3D Marios, and reaching out to new gamers is what Nintendo has been doing with the DS and Wii, rather than going for technical prowess. If Nintendo's next console is more about reaching even more gamers, I expect them to lead of with a 2D Mario rather than a 3D one.
