Forums - Nintendo - Is 3D Mario doomed?

have you guys noticed that any series made by nintendo always kicks ass? zelda, mario, metroid, star fox, pokemon...they're all great. yes there were some lame games of each franchise, but everyone can agree that those 5 games kick ass.

EDIT: forgot to say that that's the reason why mario (especially 3D) will never die.

SM64 was the evergreen title of its generation and I'm not sure why the user base for N64 would not be taken into consideration. If you release a 2D Mario on N64, it's highly unlikely it will sell 20 million on a 32.93 million user base.

Er... Maybe the sales of Nintendo consoles are tied to the main series Mario games available?

Then explain the Wii. It took off like a banshee under the assumption that there would only be a 3D Mario. It's been on pace to outsell all other Nintendo consoles combined.

Er, maybe because Nintendo abandoned Mario as their flagship series? Mario, and later Pokemon on handhelds, was the #1 attraction, flagship series on every console until Wii and DS, when Nintendo started treating Nintendogs, Brain Training, Wii Sports and Wii Fit as the #1 attraction. Wii and DS sold on the strength of those series more than any others, while every previous system sold on the strength of Mario and Pokemon more than any others.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Er... Maybe the sales of Nintendo consoles are tied to the main series Mario games available? NES had several 2D Marios and was Nintendo's best-selling home system. SNES had just 1, and sold less. N64 had the first 3D Mario platformer, and sold less than that. Gamecube had the black sheep of main series Mario games, which was 3D, and sold less than that. You can follow a similar thing with handhelds; DS > GB > GBA::NSMB > SML1/2 > remakes.

If there was a 2D Mario on N64 or Gamecube, I contend that the N64 and Gamecube install bases would have been higher.

Of course, there would also then be less excitement about NSMBW.

Those are my thoughts basically. Hardware doesn't move software it's the other way around.

I've been thinking.. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is likely to sell 20 Million copies going by the success of the original New Super Mario Bros. for DS. On the other hand, Super Mario Galaxy has sold around 8 million copies and it's sequel will most likely sell similar numbers. Let me put that in context for you:

New Super Mario Bros. Wii  >  Super Mario Galaxy AND Super Mario Galaxy 2

As we all know only too well, Nintendo like to maximise their returns - just like any competent organisation. If what I'm predicting does come about, what do you guys think is the likely hood that the flagship Mario title on Nintendo's NEXT home console will be of the 2D variety? I think it's safe to say that 2D Mario is back and here to stay, will 3D Mario suffer as a result?

First of all, 8 million in sales for one game assures that 3D mario is here to stay.

Second of all, you need to realize that they will keep making 3D mario games simply because they need to appeal to those who want only '3D' games.  Even if 50% of those who own a Wii buy New Super Mario Bros Wii, there will be those who won't simply because its a '2D' game and they prefer 3D Mario.  I know some people like this and you probably do too.
