SM64 was the evergreen title of its generation and I'm not sure why the user base for N64 would not be taken into consideration. If you release a 2D Mario on N64, it's highly unlikely it will sell 20 million on a 32.93 million user base.

Er... Maybe the sales of Nintendo consoles are tied to the main series Mario games available?

Then explain the Wii. It took off like a banshee under the assumption that there would only be a 3D Mario. It's been on pace to outsell all other Nintendo consoles combined.

Er, maybe because Nintendo abandoned Mario as their flagship series? Mario, and later Pokemon on handhelds, was the #1 attraction, flagship series on every console until Wii and DS, when Nintendo started treating Nintendogs, Brain Training, Wii Sports and Wii Fit as the #1 attraction. Wii and DS sold on the strength of those series more than any others, while every previous system sold on the strength of Mario and Pokemon more than any others.
"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
