Forums - Gaming - Is Wii Fit Fair Game???

With Wii fit Nintendo will do exactly what they set out to do with the Wii

EXPAND the audience to something other than the fat guy in the basement that only sees day light for 2 hrs.
If u take a look at one of the vids for Wii Fit, right away u can jump to the conclusion that.
Fat Americans will want to try it and, self centered Euros will need to have it.
Wii Fit gives Nintendo something thta Ms and Sony can't really compete with. and what about 3rd party developers
Wii sales that will be in relations with Wii Fit, will be similar to a newspaper company reporting false sales numbers, which results in Avertisers (3rd party DEV) selling to non existing audience.....but then maybe it doen't matter
plus those big budget 2yr+ games coming out for 360 & PS3 should be good enough to topple Wii Fit and any other game Nintendo puts togethr in 2 days

Is Wii Fit what you bought a gaming console for? Also will the millions of people who buy Wii Fit also be the type of people that'll buy hardcore Nintendo titles such as Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, etc? If not what will bringing them to the console accomplish besides selling more consoles (for bragging rights) and having third parties scratching their heads and wondering what to make that'll appeal to the majority of the userbase.

Also in my experience many people who buy home exercise equipment seem to lose interest in it after a certain length of time and simply start using the equipment rarely or not at all.  While I'm sure Nintendo will be able to come out with one or two fitness programs or games that'll appeal to people who solely buy it for the fitness aspect will it be enough to keep people interested in the long term (for years)?  If not it might simply lead to many Wiis bought for Wii Fit eventually collecting dust in livingrooms and closets.

So it doesn't matter if some Wiis are purchased only for Wii Fit. 3rd parties will sell more games on the Wii than on the PS3 and the 360, plus they will make more profit on Wii games because of lower development costs.

When?  And are you saying that those who buy Wii Fit (Nintendo first party) will be the ones that'll drive sales of third party games?  I guess we won't know for sure until months from now.  I'm just trying to say it's hard to compare these people to those who buy a 360 or PS3 or even a Wii for hardcore titles because it's not a given that they're going to be the kind of consumers that'll buy many titles.

SMG and SSBB for the hardcore and WiiFit for the casual. Id say its a nice balance.

Seeing has Nintendo make a profit on every console sold I dont think that they are at all that worried at this moment in time. So what if people are buying it just for wiifit. if they didnt there would simply be less Wiis in peoples homes.

call me Aaronbunny!

Wii code: 6993 4542 2457 6182. plz add me Im a wiily gd friend

I could see everyone who buys Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Brothers Brawl buying a Wii Fit, and then some, certainly in terms of sheer numbers.

Looking at Wii Fit I think you could immediately jump to the conclusion that it will be a must have for all hardcore gamers. Gamers that don't have Wii Fit will be laughed at by their brethren. The sales of Wii Fit will be bringing more and more third parties to the Wii as sales go through the roof.

In my experience people who spend money on enjoyable experiences tend to come back to those experiences again and again. After seeing the videos of Wii Fit I believe it's easy to predict that the long term appeal of Wii Fit is going to measured in decades.

I think people are focusing too much on stereotypes, and making assumptions about who buys what games. The claims people make about the 'casual' market are no more accurate than claiming that "only 13 year old boys, and virgins who live with their parents, are interested in Halo."

So far I am one of the only Wii owner I know who is not (essentially) being forced to buy Wii Fit; of the guys I know who own a Wii most of their girlfriends/wifes are really interested in Wii Fit regardless of their interest in videogames (one loves to play Halo 3 and World of warcraft, another has only ever played Wii Sports, and the rest fall somewhere in between).

How long people's interest in Wii Fit exists largely depends on how well Nintendo implements the games, whether third parties support the Wii Fit board (I would personally recommend Wii Ware for this purpose), and a person's interest in the activities provided.

3rd parties are not stupid. They don't just look at hardware sales, they know how to calculate attach rates and all other kinds of figures which tell them what their chances are when considering to make a Wii game.

A similar argument would be: "Are Blu-ray movies a fair feature of the PS3?"

This really isn't a different phenomenon than Madden heads who only buy sports games. Obviously the typical Wii Fit user won't be playing Resident Evil 4: but they would play Wii Fitness 2, and any other health/exercise related games. Or anything third parties make that fits in the same genre.

In other words, there are lots of gamer types that don't play Lost Planet-style games (Gran Turismo racing fanatics would be another example). It's not a new phenomenon. What happens is that other games come out in that genre to compete, and the market is fleshed out. If third parties really just sit there, scratch their heads, and literally can't figure out how to make a Wii fitness clone despite the fact that its graphics and playstyle are both simplistic, then the obvious problem is the third parties, because I think we're both agreeing there is a market here.

And I'd agree that it's a possibility that third parties won't catch on. More than anything, Nintendogs' domination really proves this: Nintendogs is a game that sells largely to young girls, who (one can presume) have zero brand loyalty to Nintendo games, unlike the Mario and Zelda fanatics. Why is it still selling so well? Because apparently most video game designers have no clue how to appeal to young girls, but Nintendo does. It really is amazing to see the crap that's shoveled at girls time and time again, even with the amazing success of Nintendogs -- and again, I think it's simply because these video game companies are built around Final Fantasy/Resident Evil/Madden style games, and just cannot figure out how to adapt.

It's hard to really trust a video like that because in the video the people look like they're having fun with the exercise portions but when I read a hands on of it the person stated the fitness parts of it were boring and seemed to be more of a chore than fun (they did say though that the game parts of it were fun).
