We're not monkeys (although some of us act like them) And why would you get frightened over a computer generated person?

Here's a realistic picture of a CGI women...I fail to see how this could be even remotely unsettling.

I sorta squirmed >.<

Ok, so Heavy Rain won't be a blockbuster among monkeys. Who cares? They're overrepresented in the medium anyway, and they should start coding their own games.

PS: the uncanny valley seems to hit me at its worst when I have the time to try to take in all the details with the same level of attention. Animation focused on eyes, hands and mouth and good voice acting sold me Alyx in the HL2 games, even if you wouldn't say from still images. I hope the guys at QD work on these details with the same care. I read that at Valve the staff has been trained in sign language and they're developing a specific tech for gestures.

Don't get me wrong. Heavy Rain looks great. It's nowhere NEAR the uncanny valley. Video Games have a long way to go.

WTF is the Uncanny Valley .. wtf ...?

In 1978, the Japanese roboticist "Masahiro Mori" noticed something interesting: The more humanlike his robots became, the more people were attracted to them, but only up to a point. If an android become too realistic and lifelike, suddenly people were repelled and disgusted.

This phenomenon has also been noted in cartoons

What if, a robot became 100% lifelike?

I have a really random hypothesis.

Constantly in nature animals are faced with things that look very similar, but not quite the same as something. Baby spiders pretending to be flowers, Lions camouflaging in golden grass, etc.

Not being able to recognize small differences, and recognizing them as threats can lead to death in nature. So that instinct maybe carried out to us? This animal instinct of recognizing fakers?

^ There have already been threads about this.

Also I hope the people making Heavy Rain know about this enough to be able to design the game so it doesn't fall into the valley for the majority of people.

^They have, they leaked the video where the main character shows her boobs remember.
