You're doing something similar to werekitten now in assuming that I am for a moment going to argue that aggregate reviews are objective. I have simply argued that it is more inherently objective than any other measure we have available.

If you want to speak to truisms, find someone with a diametrically opposed view to your own, because that is not me.

Your sales argument has a major, MAJOR flaw. Whilst it would be entirely accurate in a perfectly competitive market, the games market is missing one key ingredient of such markets: perfect information.

Games are often purchased not because a consumer knows them to be of high quality, but because a consumer ASSUMES they are of high quality.

You misunderstand my position then. You have done nothing to support the argument that they are objective at all. You continue to say it is more objective than anything we have, but you have yet to show how it is objective at all. Further, simply being more objective than any other measure is entirely meaningless. We could rate games entirely around the average number of polygons each character has and that would be perfectly objective. On the flip side being the best smelling pile of shit does not stop something from being a pile of shit. I do not see where you have shown that reviews should be considered relevant to the individual, or acceptable as a way to universally compare games.

For the record, I do not feel there is a remotely objective way to actually judge games. How do you compare a RPG to a FPS? Game length, interactivity in combat, multiplayer, and replay value are all wildly different by design. Sales show you what is popular amongst the masses. Critical reviews show you what is popular amongst game reviewers. Neither is more objective than the other.

I think the main thing to take away from this thread is that both HD platforms are starting to routinely pump out a large number of seriously high quality games.

So is the Wii.  There are so many, I don't have the time or money to even play them all.

As for the whole debate about reviews, any system that ranks Mario Kart Wii as the worst Mario Kart ever doesn't hold much weight in my book.

I don't know why Double Dash has received so good scores, but the rest is perfectly fine IMO. If you are trying to compare handhelds with gaming consoles.......well just don't do it.

Lol all I can say is fuck metacritic. In terms of quality games, Wii is exactly where PS3 and 360 are right now.

Also, PS3 has nothing to come back from. They have had 4 exlcusive AAA games this year (according to cracked out Metascores) while 360 has had none. But again, this means absolutley nothing.

Have you even played Mari Kart Wii?

Yes.

Played it with the Gamecube controller though and not with the Wii Wheel.

So then you already know that it is the best MK game ever, and that its review scores do not reflect its quality.

I know that I had more fun with Super Mario Kart & especially Mario Kart 64 in their respective generation. So yes I agree that MK 64 has a higher Metascore than MK Wii although MK Wii might have more features.

Interpretation of Metascores is everything. Something that was a 80 back then doesn't have to be a 80 today.

In their respective generation?  Super Mario Kart was good because it was the first of its kind, but Mario Kart 64 wasn't very good for its generation.  Diddy Kong Racing was better in every possible way.  DD was ok, but the driving mechanics were pretty poor.

MKWii has great driving mechanics, more drivers, more vehicles, twice the number of tracks, twice the number of multiplayer maps, tournaments, and online play.  It kicks the crap out of any MK before it.  It is one of the best, most feature packed game I've played this generation, yet it doesn't even come close to the magical 90% AAA status.

By the way Starcraft, AAA is a term borrowed from the credit rating agencies.  All it really used to mean was that a game was guaranteed to make money.

I'm also fairly sure that Mario Kart 64 would get a significantly lower score by nowadays standards than MKWii.
