I've never gotten the whole "WRPG's are exactly like D&D while JRPGS are nothing like it".

If your DM decides to make your character for you and then give you a more linear storyline that you can make choices within, that would be a JRPG.

Making a character and choosing whether or not to kill every person you come across isn't really what defines table top RPG's to me.

I would take that DM out behind the shed and beat the stupid out of him, for the record. Not that it's a bad experience, but if I wanted that I'd play EarthBound or Final Fantasy instead of letting some Cheetoh-smelling nerd dictate a story and my actions to me.

It's this that people aren't understanding. I was an avid D&D player in my younger teens. I have never really considered JRPG's RPG's at all. I alos cannot see why people think Dragon Quest is like an RPG either? I have only played 7 though. But I'm sure it works similar to the others.

And can you please note the similarities with Oblivion and Mass Effect then? My original post wasn't arguing for Jrpgs being RPGs. Actually I said they weren't. I also said WRPGs weren't either. This is all especially considering that both Jrpgs and Wrpgs rooted from the same games.

Is Demon Soul a WRPG or JRPG...though it was the former?

From Software is a Japanese developer.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

Neither. It is a Japanese developed Role Playing Game with Action-Adventure aspects. It has the linearity of  Jrpg, and the Customization of a WRPG. There is only two answers to this question imo. Either there is an RPG genre, but it doesn't represent actual Role Playing Games, or there isn't an RPG genre in Video Games and they are of various genres either mixed together, a specific genre, or are labeled as such to target a much broader audience. I believe in the latter and that is why I say there is no such thing as an RPG in video games. Either way, you can't label it as a JRPG nor can you label it as a WRPG. This is unless you label them by region. Then it is a Japanese RPG because of the company that produced it.

Edit: That sounded confusing. Basically the people who make the game label it as an RPG to target a specific audience. In reality, it is no different from an Action-Adventure.

It doesn't matter to me who makes the game...look at Lost Planet...how many japanese developers do FPS?  It's a issue of style of play...there are some very distinct characteristics of a JRPG imho.

Character creation ( full creation options. )

Background character history.

Player input influentual. ( people, quests, choice of specialties etc. )

Battle choices. ( example : 3 elfs come from the left what are you going to do? Something a DM may say. )

A main story but no forceful linear path.

Influence on multiple story arcs throughout the games. In ME's case in double figures according to ME2 and the choices made in ME1.

Fable 2 is also in this list.

It is a KRPG.

Wow. RThis thread went downhill with unecessary posts by people who will never play MC2. And Demon Souls by reviewers is said like Oblivion. Um Oblivion was as far from a JRPG as you can get. MC2 is JRPG!

Right let actual players comment. From what I understand it's actually a good game. Isn't that good for a JRPG?

This is for you and every other bonehead here. Magna Carta 2 IS NOT A JRPG. that aside, why does everyone have high expectations for a sequel to a very shitty game that ended up being full of traps?

Character Creation and the non-linear path are the only things that would count out a JRPG, and I disagree that these are defining characteristics of what make a game an RPG.

...

That just in, its not a JRPG, its a KRPG. But its not an RPG. But its actually an RPG because its classified as one. But its not because its actually an action/adventure game. But its not because its made in Asia.

Six upcoming games you should look into:
