Nintendo deserves to be on top because i like them.

Sony's arrival in to the gaming business was the start of the "corporate" era of console gaming.

It wasn't about how good you were, it was about how much money you had.

1000 times this. If you actually believe videogames from these companies (not the third parties) won't end up mimicking the dire state of hollywood blockbusters your sadly mistaken, possibly delusional.

Yes, Nintendo copy pastas their franchises but they know they can't beat it with formulaic crap, they simply won't do it especially with competition.

In a lot of ways Nintendo has been so successful this generation because they capatalized on a fairly massive shift in demographics of existing gamers while branching out to attract new gamers.

About the time the Playstation launched the average age of a videogame player passed 18 for the first time ever; and since then it has slowly been inching up. When the Wii launched the largest group of gamers were out of school and employed full time, have a girlfriend or wife, and were highly likely to have children who were at a videogame playing age; and the responsibilities of their life have eaten away the bulk of the time they have to play videogames by themselves.

Now, in this demographic shift Nintendo made a system which really targeted the needs of all members of a young family and was very inclusive to those people in a house who don’t normally play videogames. At the same time, Sony and Microsoft continued to target the narrow demographic of 15 to 25 year old men who have excessive time on their hands.

Why does Nintendo deserve to be on top?

- Because they managed to prove all the analysts, core gamers, critics, and competitors who said the Wii would fail, completely wrong.

- With the DS especially, they've created some of the most innovative games I think anyone has ever seen (Brain Age, Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Nintendogs) and have created a platform where innovation was required for third parties (motion control and touch screen, albeit third parties haven't quite figure out what the word "innovation" means yet).

-They have the best design, the most reliable console that offers the most value out-of-box. They include Wii Sports with the package and they have wi-fi built into it.

-The easiest, most fun, and best frontend UI of any console. I think motion control has overshadowed just how original the IR pointer has been for navigating menus.

-They have the best game for every type of audience. Super Mario Galaxy for core gamers, Wii Fit for women and girls, and Wii Sports for the old guys (they eat up the bowling and golf).

-Their games always have high quality and strong presentation, no matter what audience that they are geared towards.

So are you saying last gen with the gamecube, they deserved to be on top because they started gaming?

You know, that is hard to say. PS2 probably did deserve the win... I guess.. but GameCube was still my favorite console. Not enough Nintendo games on it though.
