Forums - General - Did Obama deserve the Nobel Peace prize?

I am curious as to why or why not he deserved it.

I will go with YES - and hear me out. He is talking to folks around the world FIRST before going in with guns blazing, you know, cowboy diplomacy.

Though the reason cited was he was getting rid of nukes, a lot of people have said it was premature and wrong.

My other question is - has the Nobel folks ever been wrong? Who got the award and didn't deserve it?

Discuss.

So... your argument is basically.

He should win the Nobel Prize because he's not George W Bush.  In that case... pretty much every US president should be getting a Nobel Prize from here on out.

When else did the Nobel Prize people get it wrong? 1994.

Also the complete snub of Gandi... who deserved a Nobel prize possibly more then anybody ever.

There are tons of other more qualified candidates out there.

Also... you know these aren't the same people all the time right?  The Nobel Prize commission changes.

Morgan Tsvangirai.  He was screwed out of an election.  Had every reason to riot.  His supporters were being beaten and tortured as Mugabe drove the country of Zimbabwe farther and farther to destruction... yet he still persisted that people shouldn't get violent.

Then after nobody could convince Mugabe to step down he formed a coalition government with his hated enemy... to peacefully transition power rather then cause a bloody conflict.

He did all this while mourning the loss of his wife who he lost during a car accident.  A very coincidental car accident.

Edit: Oh and he was beaten, had friends assassanated and was almost assassnated himself... for what it's worth.

No, sir. Woodrow Wilson was the last sitting U.S. president to win it. He did it in 1919.

Who won it in 1994?

And yes, Gandi did deserve it. I won't deny that. But ... my question stated did Obama deserve it or not? That's all.

I just find it so funny that some GOPers and the Tailban agree on something. That's soooooo laughable.

No.   He didn't.  He hasn't actually done anything.

A good candidate for next year possibly if he actually closes down guantanamo and accomplishes some stuff.

Most people actually believe Obama doesn't deserve it.  Hell the White House seems to indicate THEY don't believe they deserve it.  If you'll notice their official response has been abject shock.

Heck, the only reason you've given in this thread is that he uses diplomacy... like pretty much every world leader, and every president we've had except one or two.

oh yeah, I remember they had a show about him on TV a while back, certainly would have been more worthy of it than Obama, I'll agree with you on that one

No, not at all. He did nothing up until February 14th (the deadline for nominations) to deserve such an award.

No!

If Barack Obama died tonight could you fill a 1000 word obituary with enough events to support a claim that Barack Obama was one of the most influential people in history at promoting peace? The most apt analogy I can make is do you think it would be appropriate to give someone a college degree because the essay they wrote for their application was really good?

NO.

It's laughable to give it so quickly. The Noble price is laughing stock now, because it's so obvious they gave it for left-wing political reasons, that they WANT Obama to be the saviour of the world.

This is so typical Scandinavian mentality too. So damn soft and extremely naive.
