Some thoughts on next gen wars
Microsoft Xbox 360 has only sold around 2 million in the last 10 months while Wii is doing 9 million and PS3 almost 4 million since January 2007. Halo 3 has come and gone with only moderate bump in sales. Most people that bought Halo 3 already owned a 360. This is a bad sign of things to come because Microsoft has no excuse for this kind slump after 2 years of being on the market. Sony has it's stupidity and bad price strategy to blame for it's woes but Microsoft cannot complain. I am not impressed by the nonsense Microsoft executives put out about their system. It is close to dead in Japan, Europe is slightly better and North America is the money maker but how long can they capture a market saturated by competetion? I don't think Microsoft can win this generation if this continues.
Sony Playstation 3 is a mild to moderate disaster up until this point. THe hardware is too expensive and good games are hard to find and 3rd party support is awful. Sony has taken all the wrong steps and made all the wrong decisions. The only thing I can see saving this empire is TIME. Yes I think Sony had it's heart in the right place when building the PS3 which is like every geek's wet dream of features and utility. However it was way ahead of it's time and like any other premature tech gadget (iPhone), the result is often a high introductory price followed by decrease in demand and subsequent rapid price drops. What I think will ultimately save the PS3 is economy of scale and new software. The new $399 SKU is good start and comes very close to competing with the 360 at $349 but still they need the software to push units and all the big names have been pushed to 2008 GTAIV, MGS4, FF etc...etc...
My prediction for this gen
1) Nintendo Wii - 40 million
2) Sony Playstation 3 - 28 million
3) Xbox 360 - 24 million
