Forums - Gaming - What's with all the EDGE hate?

EDGE is a brittish gaming magazine, and maybe the most highly rated one in the world. Despite this, very often there are hateful remarks thrown around this very site regarding EDGE. Why is this, what do you guys have against EDGE magazine? I have heard stuff like "they are snobs", "they only give high marks to Miyamoto-games and Halo-games", "they are biased against the ps3/wii/xbox360" and more.

In my opinion EDGE is perhaps the only gaming magazine that takes this industry as seriously as it deserves. Well written, in-depth features, interviews and reviews, not to mention guest columnists, often going behind the obvious and analysing games on a slightly deeper level. I don't think they are snobs just because they try raise the standard for writing about games. I am not a child, I am an highly educated adult and I appreciate when people try to speak to me that way.

Then there's the reviews, as most of you know EDGE are much more conservative when giving out marks than almost any other publication. This is completely justified and a valuable thing in my opinion, in a market where high scores are given out left and right, eroding their true value. A nine should only be given to the very best games, with a ten reserved for an exclusive few.

Please inform me why you hate this magazine, or agree with me.

What some folks fail to realise is that "7/10" is not a bad score. People are so stupid these days that anything under 9 is considered shit. When other reviewers give out 7s its almost as if they are saying "don't bother" but when Edge does it, it's like saying "it's not bad, not mind blowing but not bad."

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

I agree with you a 100%. The issue with review scores is also a reason why people don't like Eurogamer, one of the sites I have great respect for, both for their reviews and their general content.

Well, I can only speak by observation, having no issue with the mag myself. Put simply, it has been perceived, rightly or wrongly, by certain enthusiastic people of having a bias towards 360 and against PS3, on the basis of some review scores for certain big titles.

I've looked at the reviews myself, compared them to metacritic, etc. and can only say I don't see any bias, however I think it just so happened that a couple of big PS3 titles were assigned a slightly harsher review than a couple of big 360 titles, the Edge review looked a little further away from the balance of other reviews, and people decided it had to be deliberate bias.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Edge reviews are completely inconsistent.
For example:
Bioshock 8/10
Halo ODST 9/10
Oblivion 8/10
Halo 3 10/10
Fallout 3 7/10
GTA IV 10/10
Mass Effect 7/10
Gears of war 8/10
Gears of war 2 9/10

All great games but the scores just don't make sense. Their all over the place. So there you have it Gab, try to defend them now. The funny thing is this is just a small sample of the inconsistencies found among their reviews.

For PS3 now we have:
MGS4 8/10
Killzone 2 7/10
Ratchet and Clank TOD 8/10
Demons Soul 9/10
Resistance 2 6/10
GTA IV 10/10
Infamous 7/10
Valkyria Chronicles 7/10
Bioshock 8/10
Oblivion 8/10
Fallout 3 7/10

Okay, I don't have firm knowledge, but I'll assume that Edge works like most other modern reviews instances, in that they have more than one reviewer. Those scores only have one thing in common, they where written by someone who works for Edge and uses their review system. I honestly don't see how those scores are not perfectly plausable..?

For me Edge and Eurogamer are the only reviewers whose scores hold any weight. IGN and GT throw 9's about all over the place and so their scores really don't distinguish the good games from the great. I also like that Edge and Eurogamer stick to whole number scores as opposed to decimals. How are you supposed to be able to judge a game to that degree? I doubt anyone can really tell if a game is 1% better than another. As long as you follow Edge's system then you realise that a 7 or 8 is still a good score.

I do disgaree with a few of their scores though, Halo and GTA are too high in my opinion but then again I'm just not that keen on those games. I also think Killzone, MGS4 and Valkyria Chronicles should be a little higher but I accept that reviwers opinions are going to differ from mine now and again.

Well apart from Halo that I can't really comment on (not a fan and haven't played ODST), I don't really see a problem here. Fallout 3 maybe should have been an 8, but the game was a mess. Mass Effect was good but not fantastic, 7 seems right to me. Gears of war got to high scores everwhere else because everybody was swept away by the hype/graphics, 8 is spot on. GTA IV is fantastic.

And I guess like every other publication, there are a team of people writing reviews and not just one person, so some so-called inconsistencies are natural.

I would go with this. Saying that, my gut feeling over the last couple of years is that edge is more on side of the x360.

I have nothing to back this up either way, it was just the impression I got and I wasn't even on the PS3 bandwagon.
