Forums - Sales Discussion - NPD charts show PS3 selling less than GameCube

The GameCube PS3 comparisons are really tired. The reasons both systems did underwhelming early on are completely diffirent. For the GameCube it was a combination of Nintendo's kiddy image and a lacking of third party support. The PS3's problem is price and not enough first and third party exclusives. A hell of a lot more hardcore gamers are interested in the PS3 right now than were ever interested in the GameCube. The PS3's problems are much more correctable than the GameCube's. Price will come down, and if MGS4, FFXIII, and GT5 all make it out in 2008 watch out.

As for the 40GB version this year I could see it having a solid effect. I definetly see it selling bellow the 360 for the holidays season, but the gap might not be as big as some expect.

This is terrible news for Sony, as while the Gamecube may be considered a failure due to it's 3rd place finish, it was still a success profit wise for Nintendo, in fact, it was very profitable.
Sony's practise has always been to sell the console at a loss and recoup money from game sales. The PS3 is being sold at a very large loss comparitively, and with slow sales growth, that denies any potential profit from being realized. Worse, the longer the PS3 remains in 3rd, the fewer games it will get from 3rd parties putting it into a GC like spiral of 'no sales without games, no games without sales.'
Sony doesn't need to start selling meaningful numbers sometime in '08, it needs them now. I really do hope the 40gb sells well this Christmas, as Sony cannot afford to finish 3rd with thier business model.

The PS3 will outsell the 360 this Christmas in terms of monthly sales.

I doubt it. The 360 have more interesting games coming this Christmas than the PS3. Many of them are multipltforms like Assassin's Creed, COD 4 or Army of Two. Why buy a PS3 if you can play theses games on a cheaper console ?

EB Games sent us our list of sales goals and performances and they expect to sell more on 360 than on PS3 by a fair margin, so how the PS3 can outsell the 360 ? We have 11 PS3 accumulating dust in our backstore since august while we had easly sold 30 360 and 60 Wii since that time. And it's the same thing for many of the stores in our district.

Gamertag : Dark Red Icarus

Gamerscore : 29000!!!! still growing

PSN ID : Gamer9851

Now Playing : Soul Calibur 4 and World of Warcraft

This the very last moment to post such dumb topic. After holidays it will be clear PS3's future is much more brighter. It will be even more clearer after March... anyway have fun.

I'm tired of it.

After the X TIME PERIOD has passed, the PS3 will make a comeback.

After Y GAME is released, the PS3 will make a comeback.

When Z GAME on B NON-PS3 SYSTEM fails, the PS3 will make a comeback.

I keep seeing these things posted and I'm tired of watching these predications come and go and turn out to be meaningless.

Kber81 that just won't cut it. "Wait until..." has touted for the PS3 too many times, each time the getting pushed back when the reason of the moment doesn't pan out. I wish I could find some of my N64 era or early Gamecube era posts. That had the same ridiculous logic. I am older and wiser now though.

In america? No, WWW they will be head to head, maybe the PS3 has a slight lead.

The prospects of this happening either world wide or in the US alone are bleak.  It's probable that it will happen in Europe, though.

It works both ways. I'm ultimately tired with all this final failure threads etc.. PS3 will be here for at least 5 more  years. It didn't hit with any really big title so far. Planty solid games but no real heavy hitter. We can talk about Motorstorm, Gundam etc. but you know this as good as I do - these games are nowhere close to games PS3 is destinated for. PS3 consistently gains momentum. Slowly and in pain but all big things birth in pain. Sony won't quit - current price drops are a clearly sign of serious approach to gaming division. It's not about preferences but about common sense - you can't talk about future of the system after one holidays with extremely high price tag.  As someone already pointed GC failed because of games. This won't happen with PS3 because this system have as a guest all the biggest franchises.

I am too.  I want to see Sony do something that people can genuinely say "Wow, that was a great move."

The bottomline is that I don't want to see Sony leave this industry.
