I think the diference between blu-ray and some of the better downloads is so close that average people won't care about the difference if they notice at all. And the gap will continue to diminish as internet speeds increase and better compression methods are used. That's the point, not that one is better than the other, but they are getting closer every day.
Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.
FUD, BR sales are growing and growing
back on dvd.org forums we argued about this kinda thing every day. First it was "HDDVD is killing BR", then it was "DD is killing BR", and now it's "the economy is killing BR".
this will never end, because there will always be some asshole out there who works at a costco and sees that a certain BR player had a recall, "significant blow to the industry", he'll say.

I never thought that blu-ray wouldn't increase significantly.
However, it will have to share the stage which sets it apart from dominating formats like cds, dvds and vhs. Blu-ray will be the cassette of our generation. For a long time cassettes were sold alongside records and cd's. It was reasonably successful but never truly dominated sales.

Well, the news article holds a lot of truth, but it's only painting a partial picture. It's the anti-Blu-ray fanboys who are perpetuating the FUD by taking the extreme one side. Here is a more accurate bigger picture of Blu-ray's progression...
Blu-ray adoption slightly ahead of DVD's track
OCT. 2 | PHYSICAL: Blu-ray Disc hardware penetration in the U.S. continues to run ahead of standard-definition DVD player adoption at similar points in the formats’ lifetimes, according to Futuresource research.
The two formats are nearly running neck and neck, with DVD slightly ahead in the fourth year after introduction if videogame consoles are not included. But with game consoles in the mix, Blu-ray is slightly ahead of DVD at the same point.
In 2002 and 2010, which Futuresource has determined as year five for DVD and Blu-ray, respectively, standard-def (including PlayStation 2s) reached 32.6% of households and high-def (including PlayStation 3s) will have reached 34.1%.
Although Blu-ray penetration steadily rises through 2013 (year eight) to 67.8%, according to Futuresource, it will never catch up to standard DVD players’ presence in homes at the same point in their lifecycles.
Rising digital entertainment options, such as video-on-demand and Web downloading, will keep Blu-ray from enjoying as much ultimate household penetration as standard DVD, however.
“We think that Blu-ray is going very well, considering the range of delivery platforms in this current environment compared to the early days of DVD,” said Jim Bottoms, managing director of Futuresource. Today, however, “online is stronger, there is VOD expansion, etc.”
He said that high-def players could speed up their progress into homes if Blu-ray Disc software pricing falls, especially for catalog titles.

I for one never thought that Blu-ray will reach the same percentage marketshare as DVD. But it's obvious that there is a demand and business for it because, yes, it's worth it.
Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

It was strongly impled by a number of posters. Please don't turn a blind eye because it's more SONY related than Nintendo and Microsoft.
;)

To be fair this has been happening for sometime in other places. I remember HMV had downstairs a whole wall dedicated to Blu-Ray, with these giant posters and stand out advertising boards. Roll on 6 months and it has been moved upstairs to a corner and has next to no advertising there.
The reality is Blu-Ray is not new anymore, it has been out for almost 4 years. The players are under a ton now and PS3 is cheaper. The problem is the price of Blu-Rays. After the format war Blu-Ray did not drop much at all in price. You walk into a shop and see a film you like and sometimes that film can be £3 on dvd and then £16.99 on Blu-Ray. As much as people will preach it the harsh fact is that the Blu-Ray version is not worth paying basically an extra £14 for. Dvd's are very cheap these days.
So until Blu-Ray's come down in price to be on par with say Cd's i.e £8.99 for a new one people will ignore it. HMV are doing a buy one get one free promotion again.
It will be a sad, sad day when no one sells physical media anymore.
Who the *** buys Blu Rays for 30$ ? Lol
For me Blu Ray will be allways dead , only if i can rip Blu Rays when Blu Rays rips get at 5$ a pack with 30 or more :D
Unless that Dvd has a great quality for me on my 42" Samsung LCD or on my 22" Pc LCD (When i Play Xbox 360) .
Again : Blu Ray = WorthLESS for Movies and Games ... Let a more Spaced Dvd Rule the market please .
