notice that the NES and SNES were the only nintendo home console with little changed in name

I regret making this my username, I made this name when I was 13 years old

Obviously, games libraries of the two HD consoles don't hold a candle to Wii games library, so pointing them out is rather useless.

Hmm, the Wii library didn't hold a candle to PS2 when it launched, yet 50 million + ended up buying the Wii.  Why is that?  The Wii had a lot of hype surrounding it.  Someone buying a console in 2011 will likely be buying based upon what they see commercials for on TV (new product) and hype. Existing library does not create hype, new product does.

Lifetime Sales Prediction - 6/29/2013
Wii U - 38 million
XBOX One - 88 million
Playstation 4 - 145 million

Well, you kind of have to remember, this 'gen' was strange.  Everyone was expecting the PS3 to automatically win.  But Sony kind of screwed themselves over (and over and over) with tons of bad marketing, bad slogans, bad PR stunts and the price of their products (PS3 at $600 and PSP at $350).  That prompted people to go out and by even MORE XBOX360s which came out first and later, a ton of Wii consoles, which were more than half the price of a PS3.  And like it has been shown, the DS has also taken a lot of the chunk of sales from all the consoles this gen, especially in Japan.  Where last gen, PS2 generated a MASSIVE amount of sales, this gen a lot of those sales are going towards the handhelds, mostly DS.

Next gen, we could have a totally different setup.  One console could come out on top like PS2.  Or everything could repeat with Nintendo coming out on top because people are following the popularity train.  Or people could jump on a new favorite.  We will just have to wait and see.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

@catofellow: PS2 didn't have Wii Sports.

Wiis games library was, and is, about the new kind of games that Wii made possible. Basically what PS3 and 360 offer is the same as PS2 with better graphics.
When the Sony and M$ motion controllers come out, Wii has a huge library of motion controlled games.

Wii's 'advantage is games' is simply because Nintendo Internal released 5x as many games (and better quality games) in the first 2 years than on the GC.  By the time we already had Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Paper Mario, WarioWare Touched, Mario Kart Wii, Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Galaxy, etc....what did the GC have?  Pretty much Pikmin, Smash Bros Melee, Animal Crossing and a few third party titles, with the promise of more to come later.  In other words, Nintendo made the Wii about gaming from the beginning.  And they're still producing good games at a rate that is far surpassing the GC (and may surpass the N64).

As for Nintendo not having a price advantage and 'unique' advantage in the next gen...why not?  MS is banking on Natal to be their answer.  How do we know Nintendo isn't developing something even more interesting?  Or if Nintendo is even going to focus on Motion controls with their next console?  Or if Natal will fizzle and never catch on with XBOX fans and developers (a very strong possibility).  There's too many variables to say that Nintendo is at a clear disadvantage next to Natal right now.

As for GC compatibility, I agree, it'll probably be gone in the next console.

I posted this in another thread, but I thought it fit well here.

The numbers in parathesis in the Total column are the total number of games after the fourth calender year.  This allows an easier comparison to the Wii.

Games are separated by calender year, mostly because it was just a lot easier to do it that way.  The fourth year for the Wii is 2009, and the unreleased game NSMB Wii is represented as (+1).  WiiWare for the fourth year could also grow.

I did this mostly for my own benefit, but figured this would be interesting enough to other people.  I just wanted to see how some of the claims in this thread would hold up.  These are all games, because I think the core/casual thing is mostly BS.

Yes, Nintendo has a huge library of games.  By 2011 they would have sold around 80 million consoles possibly.  This will have been a great achievement.  Maybe Nintendo should never sell a new console...

You seem to have the argument that Wii is better than the competition now therefore they do not need to sell a new console two years form now. I am suggesting that the competition will be offering newer technology and more original content (in terms of new releases) and this will represent a fundamental challenge to Nintendo.  Right now they are the exclusive console for motion controlled games.  This will no longer be the case starting next year.  Can't you see that at least some potential Wii owners will be lost, and some existing may be tempted to switch?

Now Nintendo is already on their second Wii sports, Mario Galaxy, Zelda, Wii fit.  Where will they be with original content in two years?  Whatever Sony and Microsoft internal studios offer will be totally new.

Third parties as I stated will begin selling motion games as multi platform, and the Wii version will always be inferior graphically.  It is not out of the realm of possibility that some 3rd party motion controlled games will be sold exclusively for 360 and PS3 since the hardware is more similar. Nintendo may be the best game maker in the world, but they cannot expect to compete with the creative energy of all third parties.

Is that including Japanese only games like Captain Rainbow or GC games like Doshin the Giant which never came out in America?

No, it does not include Japan only games.  Only titles released in America.

I think i've got an arguments all of you didnt said...

You already said that the most popular console always sell longer...
+
The wii is now officially the most popular console this gen (dont think the ps3 or 360 will ever catch up... or if they its gonna be =

But why would the new wii need to be release in 2 years... if the lifespan of ps3 and 360 are around 8-10 years...
Some says that its for the hardware... but if the wii is the best selling console... why matter the hardware....

My point is : Wii is selling fast and it will continue.. even if natal and sony's wand get out... Its not the same audiance... yes 360 and ps3 owner will rise but wii owner wont go down because of it...

I think the wii will be released same time as the others... not "way before" like 2011

If you think you're gaming too much, Game even more !

The Wii is doing well because it was the only one that made motion controls a major selling point.

I believe you are wrong in saying that the wand and natal are not the same audience.  The whole reason Sony and Microsoft are selling these products are to capture part of the Wii market.
