Obviously, games libraries of the two HD consoles don't hold a candle to Wii games library, so pointing them out is rather useless.

Hmm, the Wii library didn't hold a candle to PS2 when it launched, yet 50 million + ended up buying the Wii.  Why is that?  The Wii had a lot of hype surrounding it.  Someone buying a console in 2011 will likely be buying based upon what they see commercials for on TV (new product) and hype. Existing library does not create hype, new product does.

Well, you kind of have to remember, this 'gen' was strange.  Everyone was expecting the PS3 to automatically win.  But Sony kind of screwed themselves over (and over and over) with tons of bad marketing, bad slogans, bad PR stunts and the price of their products (PS3 at $600 and PSP at $350).  That prompted people to go out and by even MORE XBOX360s which came out first and later, a ton of Wii consoles, which were more than half the price of a PS3.  And like it has been shown, the DS has also taken a lot of the chunk of sales from all the consoles this gen, especially in Japan.  Where last gen, PS2 generated a MASSIVE amount of sales, this gen a lot of those sales are going towards the handhelds, mostly DS.

Next gen, we could have a totally different setup.  One console could come out on top like PS2.  Or everything could repeat with Nintendo coming out on top because people are following the popularity train.  Or people could jump on a new favorite.  We will just have to wait and see.
