Here is me picking some at random out of wikipedias list of BBC shows (not necessarily produced by them, though most are)
The Wiki list is just a small selection, and I have picked a small selection of it to list some great shows that I enjoy watching, and then highlighted a small section of what I picked to show the real gems (the blue highlighting) This is mostly comedy too as I am not interested in most sports coverage, and while I wouldn't say I enjoy watching the News (and thus took it out of the list) I pretty much would not consider watching the other channels news unless it came on to the channel I was already watching.

(Any text I added is in yellow)

oh yeah, now i can add some of those to my list

Waking The Dead, QI, My Family, The Office and Little Britan

BBC is just awful! They have no intensives to make good shows as they guaranteed government funding no matter what rating they get.

Intensives ?

Methinks someone has been at the sauce !

It's the lack of worry about ratings which make BBC shows better. I'm sorry, but CH4 just imports 90% of its content from the states, and ITV produces pure drivel. Because the BBC doesn't need to worry about catering for "the great unwashed" they can experiment with different types of programming, deliver real news (though ITN also does a brilliant job of this), and give greater budgets to period dramas, etc, which probably wouldn't see the light of day on a privately run channel.

OMG awesome!...

I believe that Channel 4 is part-funded by the licence fee.

To add to the 'good BBC list': Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes, Only Fools and Horses, Casualty (it's been going for about 30 years, must be doing something right).

I cannot believe it took until your post for someone to mention Only Fools and Horses.

What I cannot believe more is that no one mentioned it since.  What is wrong with people?

Also props for Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes not so much.

Everyone knows about Only Fools and Horses, it's like pointing out Ocarina of Time in a greatest games list (which many people do)

The BBC did a survey on the most popular British sitcoms a few years ago:

  1. Only Fools and Horses (1981-2003) — 316,657 votes
  2. Blackadder (1983-1989) — 282,106 votes
  3. The Vicar of Dibley (1994-2007) — 212,927 votes
  4. Dad's Army (1968-1977) — 174,138 votes
  5. Fawlty Towers (1975-1979) — 172,066 votes
  6. Yes Minister / Yes, Prime Minister (1980-1984, 1986-1988) — 123,502 votes
  7. Porridge / Going Straight (1974-1977, 1978) — 93,902 votes
  8. Open All Hours (1973, 1976-1985) — 67,237 votes
  9. The Good Life (1975-1978) — 40,803 votes
  10. One Foot in the Grave (1990-2000)— 31,410 votes
  11. Father Ted (1995-1998)
  12. Keeping Up Appearances (1990-1995)
  13. 'Allo 'Allo! (1982-1992)
  14. Last of the Summer Wine / First of the Summer Wine (1973-present)
  15. Steptoe and Son (1962-1975)
  16. Men Behaving Badly (1992-1998)
  17. Absolutely Fabulous (1992-1996, 2001-2005)
  18. Red Dwarf (1988-1999, 2009)
  19. The Royle Family (1998-2000, 2006, 2008)

BBC is just awful! They have no intensives to make good shows as they guaranteed government funding no matter what rating they get.

And yet most BBC shows are awesome.

Care to name some?

The only shows I watch are Top Gear and Family Guy.

I prefer to watch US TV.

Their nature programs are second to none, Planet Earth, Blue Planet, Lost Land of the Jaguar/Volcano to name a few.

Mock the Week, Have I got News for You, Never Mind the Buzzcocks are all great.

BBC's news coverage is far better than Sky.

They co-produce some great drama's with HBO like Rome.

Then they had the classics such as Fawlty Towers and Monty Python.

They also make great documentry/investigative shows.

Also, they have Newsnight, Question Time, University Challenge, Later with Jools Holland ect.

Exactly.

And don't forget That Mitchell and Webb Look. That is hilarious. And Blackadder is another BBC classic.

US TV can't come close, with a few exceptions (namely Family Guy, Futurama, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, 30 Rock and 24).

My old matey.

Sounds like Dobby has made his mind up to hate Auntie and nothing will change that. Sky make their own shows apart from sports?

I deleted fools and horses from the big long list, I can't say I find it anything special, same with Dad's army and Last of the Summer wine.

They are all 'ok' to me... well, with summer wine the early ones are 'ok' at least, but the later ones are just awful.
