but you are breaking Nintendo's warranty conditions and therefore no longer have any right to a repair if your machine goes wrong.

You can, but you most pay.

Nintendo would be within their rights not to repair modded consoles even with a charge (but this would be daft as i'm sure they make a profit when they repair modded consoles). Basically modders cannot complain...you make your bed...you lie in it.

If they break it when you've done nothing wrong they should fix it free and then do something to say "Sorry".

Exactly. This update is nothing but a bother to the people who haven't modded anyway. Another failed piracy enforcement, hitting the wrong people ... the ones that are actually paying for your things.

And if you think it's hitting the mod community hard, think again. There is already a workaround, and it's only a matter of time before everything works as before for all the modders, even after they update.

Bravo, Nintendo, Bravo!

This update risks bricking your console no matter what. Whether you have "modded" it or not makes ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE. The fact is, this is a firmware update that includes the boot2 file, and like any update of a computer BIOS, there is always a risk of bricking. So, Nintendo, in a useless attempt to get rid of homebrew (because this update has no new features or enhancements for the customers) risk bricking the Wiis of many many legit customers.

I am dead scared of running this update, as I live in Europe and own a Wii bought from Canada, getting it repaired will not be easy for me if something happens, and then I'd lose all the VC games i've spent hundreds of dollars on.

Sucks.

soft-modded, which the update destroyed, but i've been running smooth since.

Well I have a non-modded Wii with Homebrew Channel installed, I just updated HBC first and then did the update throught the Wii system menu. Everthing works fine, homebrew and all.

I think it's just people who either have a modded Wii or turned it off/had a power out in the middle of updating.

No need to stress people.

well, I just did a tiny bit of research and it looks like Nintendo did the lamest update ever. To remove the HBC they look for the tag, which the creator of HBC just changed and since HBC auto updates, if you update HBC first then move to 4.2 you are good to go but you have to reinstall stuff. So, this huge update was a waste of time due to how easy it was to bypass.

Also, some people are idiots and are pulling the plug (second post)

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

I did the update -- it did take longer than I would have thought. My son was concerned because he thought it was not moving. But within 10 minutes or so, it was done.

I didn't notice any real changes though. It sounds as if it is more technical than anything else.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Apparently it's an issue with the boot loader, apparently one of the more essential and foundational files on the Wii. They updated it to circumvent stuff like BootMii, but since the update is regarding something so essential, if the update is interfered with at all, or fails for some reason or other partway through, bam, brick.
