You not to cut price, but cutting the price is something that you reccomended? Confuserd.
Also, Sony cut the Japanese PS3 price roughly $50.

You can't ditch the PS3 and pretend it never happened...a PR nightmare...people would seriously doubt Sony's capabilities as a console and game maker...and how would you progress? Would never work.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release. (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
If they ditch the ps3 I would hate them so much I would throw my psp away and stick with nintendo.

@leo: That would be Soriku's dream, lol.

Why blame Sony? In order for them to prematurely ditch the PS3, sales would have to stall horribly,* and that would mean the CONSUMERS would be to blame, not Sony.
*Or Sony as a whole starts losing money, but the rest of the company is doing well.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

anyways, I believe andrewpeirce's idea is a great idea, but there are just too many risks with that plan...I am sure that while there are going to be people who would be interested in playing with their Playstation 2 rather than buy a-still-expensive PS3 (remember, these are CASUAL gamers, people who would rather save their money for other things than a video game system), half of those people are already interested in the Nintendo Wii, or already got them.
Then, if Sony still carries out this plan, they will definitely anger the hardcore group, the ones who dedicated their gaming future for the PS3. If the hardcore group, the only ones who are still with Sony now, decide to give up Sony because of this action, Sony will lose even more customers than actually gaining anything.
No, I don't think Sony should give up, now that they are too far into this. I may not like saying this, but they have to keep on going. However, I do believe just dropping the price of the system is not enough. I believe that if they were to help publish more games, or help with the development costs for those companies that are willing to make games for the PS3, then maybe more gaming companies would feel that it's okay to make some games for the PS3. Sure, they may lose more money, but they need the games on the system to get more royalties for the games to cover up the costs for the system. Gotta lose some to gain some, thats Sony's motto and they need to apply it both with their system and when getting games.

The PS3 is doing just fine, thank you very much. At $599, it was never going to sell like the Wii or the 360. Sony had to do several things at once: (1) be very very careful not to kill off the PS2 too quickly, (2) continue to cultivate the Playstation fan base across three platforms, (3) keep their studio system on track, (4) make sure the media functionality and features of the PS3 worked as advertised, (5) get the BluRay juggernaut rolling.
They delivered on all counts. Sure, you can critique the lack of rumble, which was a result of legal wrangling with Immersion. But this holiday season they have their hardware, software and price points all sorted out.

You're saying over 50 mil. people own/want a Wii?
Sony's in a pretty rough position because they have to keep the PS3 alive for (at least) 4 years and it has to sell at a respectable level ...
When a console fails it introduces doubt in consumers, developers and retailers which dramatically hurts your ability to sell future products. Consider Nintendo, with the challenges Nintendo faced with the N64 and Gamecube, and with the impending release of the PSP, Nintendo had a great deal of difficulty finding third party developers to produce Nintendo DS games. Even with the success of the Nintendo DS, Nintendo still had difficulty convincing third party developers that their approach with the Wii was compelling ...
If the PS3 doesn't get to a respectable level of sales and doesn't have a reasonably long life Sony will be unable to launch a PS4
